Beginning in July, when Carmel’s comfortably cool summer temperatures encourage gazing and grazing, the village shows off its eclectic and versatile personality with a world-class, non-stop lineup of theatre performances, music festivals, car events, art shows and more.

CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. (PRWEB) June 26, 2014

Since the turn of the century, Carmel-by-the-Sea has been a haven for artists and a refuge for writers and intellectuals who shaped this unique artist colony. Beginning in July, when Carmel’s comfortably cool summer temperatures encourage gazing and grazing, the village shows off its eclectic and versatile personality with a world-class, non-stop lineup of theatre performances, music festivals, car events, art shows and more.

The Carmel Bach Festival returns for a 77th season and continues to draw performers and spectators from around the globe. “The Carmel Bach Festival offers so many pleasures, it is almost impossible to keep up with them,” Barbara Rose Schuler wrote in The Monterey County Herald of last year’s lineup. This year, the festival runs July 19 to Aug. 2 with more than 45 events. Visit http://www.bachfestival.org or call 831.624.1521 for more information or to purchase tickets.

Locals know the Pacific Repertory Theatre simply as Pac Rep, but call it what you will these live performances in Carmel’s Golden Bough Theatre provide further evidence that the village is truly a world’s stage for summer. Pac Rep will stage “Hello Broadway! Tribute Concert” from July 3-27, followed by “Shrek The Musical” from Aug. 15 to Sept. 28. Visit http://www.pacrep.org or call 831.622.0100 for schedules and ticket information.

Visitors to Carmel in the month of August are all too familiar that some of the coolest cars are tooling around town. There is no shortage of events for car buffs this year beginning with the Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue (Tuesday, Aug. 12), where Carmel’s Ocean Avenue is closed to traffic and 18 blocks of downtown will be filled with more than 175 collector cars. In short order follows the Pebble Beach Concours Tour d’Elegance (Aug. 14), Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (Aug. 14-17), The Quail – A Motorsports Gathering (Aug. 15), Pacific Grove Concours Auto Rally (Aug. 15), Concorso Italiana (Aug. 16), and capped by the event that got it all started, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance (Aug. 17).

Live music, gourmet appetizers from Carmel’s top restaurants and regional wines all come together from 5 to 7 p.m. on 10 consecutive Fridays beginning July 25 at the Carmel Plaza’s “Summer Live Music Series.” This year’s opening night features music from Nu-Horizon, appetizers from Grasing’s Restaurant and wine from Wrath Wines. The series is held in the Plaza’s garden courtyard, Ocean Avenue and Mission Street. Visit http://www.carmelplaza.com/events for the complete lineup.

Two major oil painting shows are on tap this summer at Mountainsong Galleries in downtown Carmel. The “Oil Painters of America Masters Show” is set for Aug. 1-25, while the “Oil Painters of America Western Regional Show” runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 30. Visit http://www.mountainsonggalleries.com for more information.

The village’s incomparable white-sand beach is the dramatic backdrop for the Carmel Sandcastle Contest, held annually in early September. Castle builders will kick things off at 8 a.m., with judging from noon to 2 p.m. The date for this year’s 54th annual event will be confirmed later when tide reports are available. The 2013 contest was held on the third Sunday; the 2012 contest took place on the second Sunday.

The Carmel Mission Fiesta, another popular event for locals and visitors, will mark its 50th year in 2014. Located on the beautiful grounds of the Carmel Mission, the Fiesta – scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28 – will feature a barbecue, drinks, live music, arts and crafts, and games for children.

It’s never been easier to get to Carmel. Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), a 10-minute drive from downtown Carmel, has recently added direct flights to and from San Diego. Other direct flight routes include San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver, and Phoenix.

The Carmel Hospitality Improvement District – a joint organization of the City of Carmel, Carmel Chamber of Commerce and Carmel Innkeepers Association – is working to promote the village’s abundant attractions, events, and stunning seaside location. From its incomparable white-sand beach to many choices of distinctive meeting venues and lodging properties, Carmel-by-the-Sea has it all. Hillary Clinton Struggles In Discussing Family Wealth

$
0
0
DENVER (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton is a hardworking champion of women, children and the poor. Or she's a wealthy elitist more comfortable in Davos, Switzerland, than Davenport, Iowa.

Which is it? If Clinton decides to again run for president, how voters answer that question could play a role in whether she's able to win the White House.

"They raised the bar on these issues with Mitt in 2012," said Ron Kaufman, a longtime adviser to former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, whose wealth and business record were targeted by Democrats. "Now their candidates for president have to get over the same bar."

Perhaps the biggest news to come from the recent launch of Clinton's memoir of her time as Secretary of State isn't what the book says about the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, but what she's said about her personal finances while plugging the book.

It started with an interview with ABC News in which she said she and husband Bill were "dead broke" when they left the White House in early 2001, grappling with millions of dollars in legal bills. Then came an interview with The Guardian, in which Clinton appeared to draw a distinction by saying her family paid an "ordinary income tax, unlike a lot of people who are truly well off."

The couple's daughter, Chelsea Clinton, was pulled into the fray when Politico reported that she earned $600,000 a year at NBC News, where she has infrequently appeared as a special correspondent.

Those statements don't mesh well with the fact the Clintons are, by almost any measure, quite wealthy, with an annual income that places them solidly among the top 1 percent of Americans. As secretary of state, Clinton's financial disclosure report filed in 2012 showed the couple had an estimated net worth between $5 million and $25 million.

The former first lady and New York senator is by no means a billionaire but can command $200,000 or more for a single speech — four times what the median American household takes home each year. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said Tuesday that Clinton would be paid $225,000 to speak at the university foundation's annual dinner in October.

Being rich isn't necessarily a political liability for potential presidents. Democrats Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy both entered politics after privileged upbringings. The last two Republican presidents, George H.W. Bush and his son, George W. Bush, could vacation at the family's Maine seaside compound or at the younger president's sprawling Texas ranch.

Former President Bill Clinton, who defended his wife this week as someone who isn't "out of touch," said a president's wealth should matter less than the policies they seek to promote.

"I think I had the lowest net worth of any American president in the 20th century when I took office. But I still could have been tone deaf," Clinton said, adding: "The real issue is, if you've been fortunate enough to be successful, are you now out of touch and insensitive to the agonizing struggles other people are facing?"

And yet Republicans still remember how President Barack Obama's campaign dissected Romney's business dealings and capitalized on his reluctance to release certain tax records. The campaign successfully created an image of Romney tied to his wealth that was cemented by a video of him telling donors that 47 percent of Americans would automatically vote for Obama because they don't pay income taxes and are "dependent upon government."

Romney's campaign tried to respond by portraying him as a success story and a business turnaround artist. But their efforts were undermined by a series of ready-for-YouTube gaffes, telling out-of-work Floridians that "I'm also unemployed," a New Hampshire audience that he liked "being able to fire people" and a Detroit gathering that his wife "drives a couple of Cadillacs."

Such comments are reminiscent of Clinton's recent struggles to talk about her money and lifestyle, including a January remark in a speech to auto dealers that she hadn't driven a car since 1996.

While Clinton said this week any comparisons to Romney were a "false equivalency," they lend themselves to a still-forming GOP strategy of portraying her as a Washington insider who has enjoyed a privileged life sheltered by private jets, fancy homes and hobnobbing with the elites of Wall Street and Hollywood.

Democrats argue Clinton's personal wealth won't be able to overshadow a long career in public service, which began as an advocate for poor families at the Children's Defense Fund and led to years of work in Arkansas and Washington on issues such as early childhood education, expanded health care coverage and job creation.

"Attacks are most effective when they play into a pre-existing stereotype about a candidate," said Ben LaBolt, a former Obama campaign spokesman. "Nobody thinks that Hillary Clinton spent her career focused on making money. She was in the public eye advocating for a policy agenda."

In the interview with PBS NewsHour broadcast Wednesday, Clinton said her record "speaks for itself" and her "unartful use of those few words doesn't change who I am, what I've stood for my entire life, what I stand for today."

Hedge Funder Says Massive Heist May Have Been Macau's 'Lehman' Moment

Hedge Funder Says Massive Heist May Have Been Macau's 'Lehman' Moment In April, Huang Shan, a shareholder in the Kimren Group, one of Macau's top high-roller promoters, took $1.3 billion worth of the company's money and vanished.

Now Macau's entire junket funding system is facing a crisis of faith that could change the face of Asia's gambling Mecca as we know it.

"It's been a great ride — up until the point this $1.3 billion was stolen," says Jason Ader, founder of hedge fund SpringOwl and an investor in Macau's gaming industry. "All the sudden investors and junket operators were facing a loss, and the prospect that these returns are not guaranteed."

That's when Macau had what Ader calls its "Lehman Brothers moment."

To understand why this is such a shake-up, you have to understand how China's real high-rollers in Macau play. They go to VIP rooms to bet big, and those rooms are operated by junkets (the junkets can also be called VIP junket operators or VIP room promoters).

The gamblers get treated like royalty, and the junkets make money from their games. Win or lose, the junkets take a cut of every wager placed in a game. That's called "rolling chip volume."

In this model, investors in these junkets make 1-2% "guaranteed returns". Huang, the guy who made off with $1.3 billion, was guaranteeing investors an unheard of 2.5%.

When Huang disappeared with all that cash, though, investors started to demand more return for their risk. Plus, there was less money flying around to host games, so there was less money being made off the gamblers.

"Investors started to think — 'maybe this isn't worth all the brain damage,'" said Ader.

As a result of this crisis of faith, some small listed junket firms have taken a beating. Over the last year, one junket listed on the Nasdaq, Iao Kun Group Holding Company Limited (formerly known as Asia Entertainment & Resources), is down 20%.

There is, however, a bright shining light here. China's middle class is ascending and becoming a higher margin customer for casinos. Mass market gamblers led the charge in Macau's 20% year over year revenue surge last quarter. The completion of infrastructure projects like the bridge between Macau and Hong Kong and a high speed rail connection to the mainland will ensure that more of them can go to Macau and play.

So instead of Macau being a haven for gangsters and high-rollers, it'll be like Las Vegas now — a city of watered-down sin with kiddie pools and Celine Dion shows.

How We Determined the 19 Best Cities for Millennials

$

How We Determined the 19 Best Cities for Millennials Determining the best cities is not an easy task. Not only are cities constantly growing and evolving, but it is also extremely hard to quantify subjective preference. An answer to the question “Where do I want to live?” is partially determined by constraints (such as rent affordability), and partially by desires (such as living in a neighborhood with great bars).

As a result, we decided that one way to compute a city's Value According to Millennials Score (or, the VAM Score) would be to create a weighted average of 15 variables that reflected what the average millennial considers when choosing a city. We considered factors such as rent affordability, unemployment, cost of living, and net percentage increase of employers in order to reflect the financial and economic constraints that millennials face. We also looked at social factors such as the number of restaurants, the arts and sports scenes, average cost of date night, and the best pizza to reflect the cultural appetites of millennials.

Furthermore, because urban millennials — for the most part — are not getting married and having children yet, we did not consider variables like "best city for kindergartens". This would have been a major variable in city valuation for another age group, but it does not accurately reflect the average millennial's interests.

Theoretically, a “perfect” city in my valuation would earn a score of 100 because I chose to break up the 15 variables into percentages out of 100. Each variable was given a different weight depending on how influential it was to making the ultimate decision of city choice. For example, although population density is an important factor, if you can’t afford housing in a dense city, it does not matter how dense that city is. Therefore, housing affordability received more weight.

Perhaps the most important thing to realize is that this valuation is NOT absolute. Although there is an attempt to reflect millennial values, the reality is that the scale is something that was designed in order to give a numerical measure to cities in order to better understand how these variables relate to one another. It is not a complete scale. People will certainly value variables differently than we did, and will probably value variables that we have not considered (such as proximity to family).

Interestingly, after we collected all the data, but before we actually calculated the VAM Scores, we expected Austin to come in number one. It was the most flourishing city, growing with new talent and culture. However, the VAM Score gave it 9th place. Relative to bigger cities like San Francisco, Austin has small numbers. As a result, it received a lower VAM Score.

We actually started with a list of 42 cities, and only shaved it down later. People who prefer bigger cities might be surprised to see that small contenders like Lincoln, Nebraska and Sioux Falls, South Dakota made the cut. However, smaller cities have seen economic booms recently. There has been significant job growth and very low unemployment rates in places like Sioux Falls and Lincoln, thus they earned higher scores than other major cities like Miami, Oakland, and Las Vegas.

*How We Weighted Things*

*Average median rent: 12%.* Housing and/or rent prices are the first thing that people consider when they are relocating. Today, housing and rent prices are rising, which makes it all the more difficult to actually find somewhere affordable to live. We used rent because most millennials cannot afford to buy a house.

Because housing prices are constantly changing, we broke up the cities into three groups: the most expensive (who earn 8/12 points), the mid-range expensive (who earned 10/12 points), and the least expensive (who earned 12/12 points). We chose this grading scale because we did not want to give the most expensive cities like New York and San Francisco scores of 0/12 despite their expensive real estate. In reality, New York and San Francisco’s high prices reflect the extreme desirability of both locations — which was something that did not warrant a low score in this valuation.
(Data from here.)*Unemployment rate for city*: *10%*. When calculating, we actually used the employment rate (100%-unemployment rate%). This is another important factor that gives clues about the economic health of a given city. Unfortunately, a better number would have been the net increase/decrease of the unemployment rate, which would have given a better gauge as to how the city was changing in the past few years. This could’ve given clues about how well the city would have done in the future. For example, just because City A has 3% unemployment, if next year it has 7% — that’s not a good number. But my function only sees the 3%.
(Data from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.)

*Net percentage increase of employers: 10%.* We found the cities that had the highest increase of employers in the last year. Cities that are housing new employers will be looking to hire many new people – which is perfect for millennials. This is a very important statistic because it reflects positive economic change in a city. As a result, we gave this a solid 10% value points for cities who were leading the way — these cities had a roughly 20% net increase of employers. The other cities had significantly less, and they were awarded 5%.
(Data from Manpower.)

*Violent crime rate: 5%. *A not-so-fun factor, but important. Unfortunately, lower rental prices are correlated with increased crime in a given sector of a city. As a result, millennials looking for cheap housing should also consider how safe that location might be. We ranked this by "violent" crime rate per 100,000 people. Cities between 397.5 to 517.2 were considered safe cities (such as Portland) and earned 5 points. Cities with scores of 615.9 to 835 were considered mid-range safety cities and earned 3.33. Finally, relatively unsafe cities like Washington D.C. and Atlanta (with scores from 1294.50 to 1379.00) earned 1.67.
(Data from FBI. Note: therefore this only reflects statistics known by law enforcement, and does not account for unreported crimes.)

*Number of bars, clubs, restaurants: 8.5%
Number of arts, entertainment, recreation locations: 8.5%
Number of concert venues: 8.5%
Number of sports venues: 8.5%
*All these factors reflect the interests of a millennials who are not yet burdened by family life. Although this does not take into account quality, in order to use concrete numbers, we chose to go by “number of X”. The higher the number of venues should reflect the overall city’s saturation of that particular cultural faction. (For example, NY and LA saw the highest numbers for arts and culture, which accurately reflects that they are known as the two cities for great art scenes in the U.S.)
We broke up these categories into groups of three again: super saturated (earning 8.5), saturated (earning 5.67), and under saturated (earning 2.83)

For restaurants: super saturated was from 10,056 to 40,009; saturated was from 5,133 to 9,500; unsaturated was from 285 t0 3,165.

For the arts, entertainment, recreation: supersaturated was from 3,256 to 13,623; saturated was from 986 to 1,470; and unsaturated was from 8 to 616.

For the number of concert venues: supersaturated was from 106 to 597; saturated was from 49 to 62; and unsaturated was from 2 to 36.

For the number of sports venues: supersaturated was from 122 to 265; for saturated it was from 33 to 70; and for unsaturated it was from 4 to 31.
(Data from U.S. Census.)*Average cost of date night: 3%.
% of unmarried households: 2%.
*For better or for worse, another important part of a millennial’s life is the dating scene. We found a list of the "best cities for singles" which was tabulated by two categories: the average cost of a date night and the percent of unmarried households. The cities with higher percentages of single households, ranging from 49.3% to 53% earned 2 (while those with less earned 1). The cities ranked the 'best' for date night earned 3 for the average cost of date night (others earned 1).
(Data from Kiplinger.)

*Average cost of milk: 7%. *We decided to split “cost of living” into two categories. This first one was for things that people need, which we represented with milk. The most expensive milk ranged from $1.07 to $1.40 which earned 2.33 points (cities including New York and San Francisco). The mid-range expensive milk ranged from $0.90 to $0.96 and earned 4.67 points (including Dallas and Seattle). The least expensive milk ranged from $0.79 to $0.88 and that earned 7 points (cities including Salt Lake City and Portland).

There was one strange outlier, which was Sioux Falls. The price listed was $3.58 which seems like an mistake considering the fact that New York's price was $1.40, and NYC has the highest overall cost of living.
(Data from Numbeo.)

*Average cost of domestic beer in restaurant: 7%. *This is the second part of “cost of living” — although this category reflects things people want. The most expensive beer ranged from $5 to $6, which earned 2.33 points (in cities like New York and San Francisco). The mid-range beer ranged from $3.38 to $4.50 (in cities like Sioux Falls and Denver). And the least expensive ranged from $3 to $3.25 (in cities likes Columbus and Austin).
(Data from Numbeo.)

*Best places for women: 3%. *Women make up more than 50% of college grads, and are significant players in the workforce. Cities with the highest ratio for female salary to male salary score 3. These cities included San Francisco (84%), Washington, D.C. (81.90%), Austin (82.80%), and Dallas (84.60%). All other cities received 1 point. This matters because, to paraphrase what Bill Gates said to a segregated audience at a business conference in Saudi Arabia, if you want your economy to grow, you cannot ignore 50% of your population.
(Data from NerdWallet.)

*Population density: 2%. *This we calculated as a measure of competitiveness. The more dense a city was, the more likely it would be that people were competing for the same job as you. The most dense cities received a 0; the mid-range received 1; and the least dense cities received a 2.
(Data calculated from Capita/acre.)

*Best Pizza: 5%. *This was partially funny and partially a measure of quality of food/restaurants/etc. We went to Zagat to find the “Best 15 Pizza places in America”. New York had 2 (5%); other cities had 1 (4%); and others had 0 (3%).
(Data from Zagat.)

*Extra Data – Not factored into calculation but important. *We also collected data for the percentage of residents who owned a bachelors degree or higher in a given city, although we ultimately chose to not factor that in numerically because that number has both positives and negatives. On the positive end, more residents with a bachelor’s degree might indicate that the quality of jobs (intellectually or creatively) might be higher. However, the more residents with bachelor’s degrees, the more competition a new grad might have. We did not have sufficient data to estimate this, and of course there was a lot of variability between cities for this number.

*Bonus Fun City Facts*

Blue State Blues: 24 Hours, 5 Cities and No High-Speed Rail

Blue State Blues: 24 Hours, 5 Cities and No High-Speed Rail (6:30 a.m.) For the past 24 hours, I have been on the move. Early Thursday morning, a colleague picked me up at home and we drove south to Anaheim on the I-405 and CA-22. We caught Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner to Solana Beach, then took an Uber south to La Jolla on I-5. We did the same in reverse, whereupon she drove me to Long Beach Airport. I caught the 3:15 JetBlue flight to Oakland, took the BART to San Francisco, then took the overnight Greyhound back to L.A.

Along the way, I was able--thanks to a portable Verizon WiFi device (though no thanks to a faulty WiFi system on the overnight Greyhound bus)--to dole out assignments for Breitbart California, write two news articles (one on foreign policy and one on the Supreme Court decision in NLRB v. Noel Canning), conduct an interview with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, write up that interview, cover a panel discussion on gay marriage, edit several other pieces, and sleep.

The total transportation cost for the trip, for me, was roughly $325. That’s not bad, considering I visited at least five major cities and took in a bit of scenery along one of the world’s most magnificent coastlines.

Perhaps high-speed rail, had it existed, might have cut an hour or two out of the journey. I doubt that it would have been cheaper, or--and this is crucial--that it would have been more convenient. Essentially, high-speed rail is a pricey solution in search of a problem.

That is especially clear in light of the fact that we do not currently have a reliable “low-speed” rail connection between downtown Los Angeles and downtown San Francisco. The only option for direct overland travel is a bus, or a train in combination with a bus, or two trains (Amtrak and Caltrain) with bus connections. It seems that a normal rail connection between the two cities might be a more realistic, less costly, and ultimately useful public transportation goal.

Yet perhaps the goal of high-speed rail is something other than connecting one place to another. The proposal, as described by Gov. Brown at his most enthusiastic, has two main benefits.

One is that high-speed rail will show that the United States can still do great things--that we can achieve feats of engineering and planning as ambitious as those of the Japanese in the 1970s (whose own train first inspired Gov. Brown on a visit there) or the Chinese state of today.

The other goal is to save the planet from climate change by removing cars from the road and moving people across the country in more energy-efficient ways. Some environmentalists are unsure that the high-speed rail project will, on balance, save energy. Yet the idea seems to be that this mass transit project will inspire others across the country and across the world, that it will achieve by example to others what it may fail to do in its own particular, individual case.

Both of the above arguments amount to an aesthetic defense of high-speed rail, not actually an environmental case (still less an economic one). The idea of high-speed rail makes some of us feel good; therefore we must build it. It is essentially the world’s most expensive amusement ride, which is why the proposal once bandied about to build a high-speed rail link between Disneyland and Las Vegas might have been the best version of the plan devised thus far.

But there is probably more carbon saved--in case you’re worried--in an electric car than in an expensive public works project. There is probably just as much convenience in a WiFi-equipped airplane, train or bus. And California is so beautiful--why would you want to speed through it?

If I were GOP gubernatorial candidate Neel Kashkari, I would focus on the "crazy train" alone--the only one on which voters side with him against a governor they otherwise like. Reported by Breitbart 7 hours ago.

"Not Truly Well Off": Bill Clinton Was Paid $105 Million For 542 Speeches Since 2001

Not Truly Well Off: Bill Clinton Was Paid $105 Million For 542 Speeches Since 2001 In Hillary Clinton's attempt to seem "one of the people", she made the public relations debacle of portraying herself as "dead broke" at the time she and Bill Clinton left the White House. Of course, the reason this attempt at populist pandering backfired (certainly not helped by her daughter's just as mistimed quote that she "Was Curious If She Could Care About Money And Couldn't", an expected outcome considering such boondoggles as a $600,000 NBC job for doing, well, something, and being married to a hedge fund manager) is because as is well-known, even the least educated American, the bulk of wealth American president families accrue is not while in office but after, when they hit the speaking/book publishing circuit.

This is just what WaPo found when it conducted a review of the Clintons’ federal financial disclosure: *it found that Bill was paid $104.9 million for delivering 542 speeches around the world between January 2001 and January 2013, when Hillary left her job as secretary of state*.

From WaPo:

Over seven frenetic days, Bill Clinton addressed corporate executives in Switzerland and Denmark, an investors’ group in Sweden and a cluster of business and political leaders in Austria. The former president wrapped up his European trip in the triumphant Spanish Hall at Prague Castle, where he shared his thoughts on energy to a Czech business summit.

*His pay: $1.4 million.*

That lucrative week in May 2012 offers a glimpse into the way Clinton has leveraged his global popularity into a personal fortune. Starting just two weeks after exiting the Oval Office, Clinton has delivered hundreds of paid speeches, lifting a family that was “dead broke,” as wife Hillary Rodham Clinton phrased it earlier this month, to a point of such extraordinary wealth that it is now seen as a potential political liability if she runs for president in 2016.

Visually (for the full interactive chart annotating each speech, click here).

Who paid?

Although slightly more than half of his appearances were in the United States, the majority of his speaking income, $56.3 million, came from foreign speeches, many of them in China, Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom, the Post review found.

*The financial industry has been Clinton’s most frequent sponsor. The Post review showed that Wall Street banks and other financial services firms have hired Clinton for at least 102 appearances and paid him a total of $19.6 million.*

Visually:

Bill Clinton: Wall Street's motivational speaker?

“He’s a stud,” said Anthony Scaramucci, founder of SkyBridge Capital, which paid Clinton $175,000 to address its annual investment conference in 2010. Clinton’s speech at the Las Vegas confab was so riveting, Scaramucci said, “there was nobody at the Bellagio cabana sunning himself when President Clinton was in the ballroom speaking.”

One of Clinton's biggest fans: *Goldman Sachs has hired Bill Clinton for eight speeches over the years totaling $1.35 million, many of them client meetings in such locales as Paris, Phoenix, and the South Carolina beach resort of Kiawah Island*.

Goldman also has paid Hillary Clinton: She addressed tech entrepreneurs in Arizona last fall and women in finance in New York this year.

*“President Clinton’s always interesting, but there’s a lot more demand right now for her because she just came out of government and people want to hear about that, whether it’s Iran or Russia or the big challenges she’s faced, and about the dysfunction in Washington*,” said a Goldman executive who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal thinking.

Aside from money, what does Clinton get out of it?

*“It makes me feel like I’m president again,” *Clinton said in 2012 as he looked out at a large convention crowd at the National Retail Federation, which paid him $200,000. Clinton shared advice with the retailers passed down from his mother: “When I wanted to be a musician, I was not very good for years, and she just kept beating up on me and she said, ‘You just can’t quit.’ ”

In his addresses, Bill Clinton speaks about policy issues of the moment, domestic and foreign, and tailors his remarks to the business interests of his sponsors. He often speaks without notes and keeps his audiences in rapt attention, playfully answering questions and dispensing pearls of wisdom from his White House years or childhood in Arkansas.

The people willing to pay Clinton to speak surpasses even those happy to pay Bernanke some $200,000 per speech.

Although many former presidents hit the speaking circuit in retirement, Bill Clinton’s staying power has been unusual. His busiest year on record was 2012, when he gave 72 paid speeches and earned $16.3 million, according to The Post’s review.  “I’m shocked that people still want me to come give talks,” Clinton said this week, appearing to feign modesty in an interview with NBC’s David Gregory.

Curiously the older Clinton has gotten, the more he has been paid for every speech:

Clinton is hardly alone in milking the speaking tour:

Other former presidents also have stirred controversy with their paid speeches. Shortly after leaving office in 1989, Ronald Reagan received $2 million for addressing business executives in Tokyo at a time when the United States had an acrimonious trade dispute with Japan. George H.W. Bush made millions of dollars speaking to corporate groups around the world, as has George W. Bush, who in 2011 addressed, among others, financial firms caught up in scandal.

Which is great: after all this is what capitalism is all about - we would be the last to begrudge the Clintons their wealth if it was obtained legally and through hard speaking work (we certainly fail to see what insight one gleans from a Clinton speech for $200,000 but that's a different story). However, with a bank account that is now well over the $100 million mark, a fact known by everyone, trying desperately to pass off as being "*not truly well off" *and one of the 99.9% simply won't fly. The only question now is whether it is too late for Hillary to pivot back to the real world, where she and the person on the street, have absolutely nothing in common. Sadly for her, that may well mark the end of her presidential chances. That's ok though: with several million to burn, we are confident she will find other well-paid distractions in which to bury her sorrows. Reported by Zero Hedge 7 hours ago.

‘Under the Electric Sky’ Review: Visually Stunning Rave Film Wears Out Its Welcome

$

Part concert movie and part “The Amazing Race,” “Under the Electric Sky” follows six groups as they converge on the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas to dance their hearts out.

The 3D movie is visually stunning, emotionally stirring, and slickly made, but it loses steam as the marathon concert wears on. By the end, it's as tediously repetitive as some of the dance music it celebrates.

Co-executive produced by Carnival impresario Pasquale Rotella, the movie treads lightly on the drug usage that is an established presence on the rave scene, instead pumping up the themes of love and acceptance while lingering a tad too long on some of the mugging faces of certain scantily-clad attendees. Co-directors Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz have a background in TV reality shows including “Top Chef” and “Project Runway,” and it shows, both in the film's slick production values and its repetitive themes.

*Also read:* Electric Daisy Carnival Attendee From California Dies in Las Vegas

The first few times we hear EDC attendees enthuse about how much acceptance they've found at dance music concerts, it's affecting, but after a while the observation starts to make the production seem like an offbeat infomercial at best. At worst, it comes off as apologia for the darker, drug-fueled side of these concerts.

“Under the Electric Sky” is at its best in the beginning, as it follows the groups getting ready for the concert. Their excitement is palpable: There's an anxious girl from small-town Texas, a group of dudes traveling from Cape Cod in an RV, long-distance lovers, an unconventional rave “family” with open relationships, a man in a wheelchair, and even a long-term couple preparing to tie the knot at the festival.

The movie traces the elaborate set-up of the event, which contrasts nicely with the earlier underground raves. Old-timers amusingly explain the covert ways they used to find out about raves that now can be texted or tweeted to interested parties.

*See video:* Beyonce, Jay Z Bring Hollywood Heat in ‘Run’ Trailer for Concert Tour

As “Electric Sky” unfolds, there are nods to drug use — turns out one of the pals of the Boston guys OD'd a few months earlier — and a visit with medical personnel doing their best to prevent mishaps amid chants of “Please help me find molly.” Then it's on to more music and more delirious fans.

The directors, who previously produced documentaries about Katy Perry and Justin Bieber, keep the proceedings as light as possible. But by the time the sun rises after the first day, the movie's charm has begun to wear off. Cross-cutting between the fan subjects becomes less effective with time; the rave family especially wears out its welcome. Even a deeply emotional tribute by the Boston guys toward the end fails to rouse the way it should; all but the most ardent fans will have long ago been ready to call it a night.

The movie arrives a week after two more deaths at the latest EDC concerts, and that's something to think about after the music ends. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy the show; it's quite a spectacle to behold.

Seattle is also known as one of the best coffee cities in the country (especially since it is the original home for one of the biggest chains around, Starbucks) and offers travelers too many delicious coffee joints to count. Starpoint Resort Group recommends grabbing a new novel and trekking around to find the best espresso in town, the perfect method of relaxing while away.

2.    Omaha, Nebraska: This city boasts many attractions and is a place Starpoint Resort Group knows is perfect for all the adventurous travelers out there. For those who are seeking something a little strange to try, there are the underground caves at Henry Doorly Zoo that are open for all those interested to explore. There are also a lot of opportunities for a fun night out on the town, since there are a great deal of different types of bars. So have a drink and relax, and see just who can be met while out on the town.

3.    New Orleans, Louisiana: New Orleans is home to some of the most beautiful architecture around, some of it dating back as far the 1700s. The best place to truly get a feel for this is the French Quarter. This city is a guaranteed good time, offering a wide variety of Cajun and creole delicacies, along with some of the most delicious seafood around. Of course, travelers can’t pass up a walk down Bourbon Street, home to the famous Mardi Gras celebration that takes place each year in February.

Capira Technologies LLC, a software and mobile app technology developer for libraries, announced today a service integration option with StackMap™, a bookshelf visualization platform for library catalogs.

Medford, NY (PRWEB) June 27, 2014

Capira Technologies LLC, a software and mobile app technology developer for libraries, announced today a service integration option with StackMap™, a bookshelf visualization platform for library catalogs.

StackMap™ is a solution that provides patrons with a detailed map and written directions to an item in one click, without ever leaving the catalog. Libraries who already have the service will also have the option to use it in their mobile apps when signing up with Capira Technologies for their mobile patron service. Hampton Library, based in Long Island N.Y., is the first to integrate StackMap™ into their mobile library app developed by Capira Technologies. The update containing StackMap™ integration for Hampton Mobile Library is expected to be available on Apple iOS by July 1 and Android by July 30.

Kelly Harris, Library Director at Hampton Library, stated that the benefits of this new feature for patrons would improve their overall experience at the library, especially for those who prefer serving themselves.

“Offering a mobile app with StackMap™ and self-checkout allows our busiest library users, and soon-to-be library users, to find the item they need in the catalog while they sit and wait to pick their kids up, map it as they walk in the library door, find it, check it out and continue on with their busy day ... no waiting in line, no small talk, no tiny paper receipt they will lose,” she stated.

Harris added that Hampton chose to include the feature to provide patrons with more privacy in their publication selections for sensitive materials, such as research for a family member who has been diagnosed with cancer, or a teenager at home suffering from depression.

By leveraging the StackMap™ set of web APIs, Capira Technologies mobile apps will now provide the capability to display the visual mapping layout of where an item resides inside the library when users search the catalog. Additionally, the app will automatically zoom to the location of the item selected on the graphical mapping, allowing patrons to easily find where their item is located. This functionality in Capira Technologies mobile apps will sit alongside other patron-first features the developer offers, such as digital library cards, mobile library card signup and renewal, self-checkout, and push notifications.

"We are excited to offer StackMap™ integration into our customized library mobile apps,” said Michael Berse, Managing Member and Lead Software Engineer of Capira Technologies. “It is another excellent enhancement we can offer to our library customers based on features and services that their patrons are looking for.”

Lex Cooke, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of StackMap LLC, stated that he is happy to be collaborating with Capira Technologies and bringing the service directly to mobile devices.

“We are particularly excited to be working with Capira on mobile because it will enable StackMap™ to provide that much more value to a library patron, by giving that patron the ability to carry the digital map with them while they attempt to navigate the physical space of the library,” he stated. “Working with Capira has been a great experience for us to really collaborate and tailor the StackMap™ experience to a native mobile environment.”

Capira Technologies and StackMap LLC will be available at the American Library Association’s annual conference in Las Vegas June 26–July 1 at Booths #2255 and #2257 to speak more about the new integration with StackMap™.

The Girls' Lounge Takes Cannes with Confidence

$

The annual Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is a spectacular display of the world's best advertising, with an overlay of seminars, meetings, networking, parties, intimate dinners and not-so-intimate dinners. It is the place to be. And in some moments, it's a place that makes you want to hide away just to catch your breath.

Thankfully, there was a destination passed on from one female advertising executive to another... The Ipsos Girls' Lounge, a sanctuary away from the madness. Set up inside a sprawling penthouse at the Hotel Martinez this year, this growing group of smart, savvy women continued to redefine itself.

The Girls' Lounge began as a female-only oasis at a few select conferences, providing beauty touchups that boost outer confidence -- a great blowout, a fresh manicure, professional makeup and digital profile makeovers. In its second Cannes Lions, the Girls' Lounge dug deeper with its Confidence Circle breakfast series and afternoon networking sessions, delving into issues that resonate strongly with professional career women.

Against the backdrop of the French Riviera, advertising's All-Stars, including, Meredith Levien, New York Times' executive vice president of advertising, participated in a spirited debate about the future of women and their lack of representation at the top. Shelley Zalis, founder of the Ipsos Girl's Lounge, challenged companies to not fill quotas for female leaders -- but to actively seek out the most qualified women for these top roles and to adapt the working conditions for them. We need to keep our talented female executives opted in.

A resounding note rang true over and over: Women need to be less modest. We should be able to say we're great and be confident about it. If you feel you have a different perspective and never speak up, you're not going to get anywhere. If you want to get to the next level, you have to express yourself with what makes you unique and special.

"Female empowerment is about embracing feminine qualities like nurturing and collaboration," said Zalis. "The companies that are successful now have these as core values although they were once considered to be too female."

Zalis also shared how she gained balance early on by thinking forward. "Will I regret this? If my kid is playing in a game and he/she wants me to be there because it's important to them, I won't miss it. You have to change the meeting, or find someone else to take it... rebalance yourself. If I am going to regret something later, I don't do it!" said Zalis.

An equally important component to balance and boosting confidence is taking care of your body during a packed business trip. Instructor Nicole Rijelle led the sunrise stretch, and reminded the ladies that in addition to paying our credit card bills, we must also remember to pay our "sexy bill"! It's easy to push off exercise and eat badly while away, but we must break that work travel habit. And once we brought our sexy back, Courréges provided wardrobe consultation, sharing a stunning array of ensembles to show off the tone.

One of the things I love most about the Girls' Lounge is you never know who you're going to meet or what you will hear. From Gayle Fuguitt, CEO of ARF to Melissa Goidel, CRO of Refinery29 to the mother of Atlantic Recording Artist Katy Tiz who flew to Cannes just to hear her daughter rock the terrace with her hit "The Big Bang."

All week along the Croisette, women were seen carrying their pink and white gift boxes from PopSugar, with perfectly coiffed hair, stunning makeup, their bags stuffed with business cards and lightness in their festival-weary feet. All telltale signs they had just visited the Girls' Lounge.

The Girls' Lounge has opened up the energy to have dialogue between women, with the authenticity of trust between girlfriends. I hope to see you at the Girls' Lounge at ANA in Orlando on October 15-18, and at CES in Las Vegas in January 2015.
