Failed Senate Gun Bill Would Not Have Stopped Las Vegas Attack

Failed Senate Gun Bill Would Not Have Stopped Las Vegas Attack The expanded background check bill that failed to pass in the Senate last year would not have stopped the June 8 Las Vegas attack that ended with two police officers and legally armed civilian "hero" Joshua Robert Wilcox dead.

This is because the guns Jerad and Amanda Miller used were either legally purchased or stolen off the dead police officers after the Millers killed them.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, "all the Millers' guns were legally bought by Amanda in Indiana, aside from the two they stole from slain officers Alyn Beck, 41, and Igor Soldo, 31."

With no knowledge of how the guns were acquired, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) pointed to Las Vegas as a justification for expanding background checks on June 9. Breitbart News reported then that he was calling for more gun control before the facts were in on the Las Vegas attack.

With the facts in, it is now clear Amanda Miller acquired her guns "legally," as did Elliot Rodger (Santa Barbara), Ivan Lopez (Ft. Hood 2014), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard), Paul Anthony Ciancia (LAX), James Holmes (Aurora Theater), Nidal Hasan (Ft. Hood 2009), to name but a few.

The failed Senate bill would not have stopped any of these, but it would provide an impetus for the creation of a national gun registry.

RNC 2016 Down to Dallas and Cleveland

RNC 2016 Down to Dallas and Cleveland HOUSTON, Texas—Dallas makes the cut to the final two cities being considered to host the 2016 Republican National Convention. The Site Selection Committee for the Republican National Committee (RNC) announced the finalists as Dallas, Texas and Cleveland, Ohio.

The RNC made the announcement today in a press release from Washington, D.C. It comes after an exhaustive search and review of the potential host cities’ bids and presentations. The committee also visited the applicant cities. Other cities that were originally in consideration and eliminated by today’s announcement include Cincinnati, Columbus, Denver, Kansas City, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

“After extensive review the site selection committee has chosen Cleveland and Dallas as finalists for the 2016 convention,” the committee said in its press release. “Cleveland and Dallas demonstrated their ability to host a phenomenal convention in 2016, and the RNC is excited about the prospect of hosting our convention in either of these great cities. After visiting both cities, I can say to my fellow Republicans that we should be excited for the 2016 convention. These world class cities know how to roll out the welcome mat, and more importantly they have the ability to provide our next presidential nominee a launching pad that will put a Republican in the White House in 2016.”

Dallas was originally considered a long-shot for the selection process having entered the competition late. Breitbart Texas reported in February, the city’s announcement that it intended to seek do be selected as the host city. At that time, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, a Democrat, said in a letter co-signed by former Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, “The city of Dallas is enthusiastically throwing its hat in the ring. We must move quickly. Our bid preparation is underway.”

“We are playing catch-up fast and furiously, putting the bid together,” said Phillip Jones, president and CEO of the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau in February. The catch-up play seems to have worked as Dallas makes the final two cities under consideration.

“The committee extends our sincere thanks and gratitude to Denver and Kansas City for their hard work and dedication to this effort.  Both teams should be proud of their work. They were great ambassadors for their cities, and we felt fortunate to visit and get to know them. This was a tough decision for our committee because all four of these cities made excellent bids.

The Dallas Morning News reported on its home city’s qualifications back in February:

Dallas offers a number of political advantages:

The state’s large and growing Hispanic population is a key target for the GOP.

Republicans have held a firm grip on statewide offices for two decades, although the city and county have shifted to Democratic control in recent years.

The area’s GOP donor base is robust.

The last time Dallas hosted an RNC convention was in 1980 when Ronald Reagan won the  Republican nomination for president and Texan George H.W. Bush was nominated to run for vice-president.

“As we move closer to choosing a host for our convention, I’m more confident than ever that we’ll have an outstanding partner to showcase our Party and our Republican nominee in 2016.”

May Showed Improvements For Housing Inventory

The Federal Savings Bank shares news of recent much needed improvements to real estate inventories.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 26, 2014

Though tight inventory has continued to be a problem for first-time home buyers during the housing recovery, conditions improved in May. The Federal Savings Bank, a veteran owned bank located in the Midwest, finds this news is positive for the entire housing industry.

According to Zillow's Real Estate Market Reports, the inventory of for-sale homes in the U.S. increased 11.8 percent year over year in May. Month over month, there was a 4.3 percent rise, representing the third consecutive monthly increase. These gains followed slumps that plagued 2012 and the majority of 2013, providing potential home buyers with the opportunity to shop for homes with less intense competition.

By analyzing more than 600 metro areas, and 506 of these locations had year-over-year inventory growth in May. The Las Vegas market posted the most noticeable gain, climbing 51.5 percent compared to May 2013.

"It's good to see overall inventory rising," said Stan Humphries, Zillow's chief economist. "It's likely that many would-be sellers have decided to capitalize on recent home value gains, particularly as the pace slows, and list their home for sale now in order to move into a new home while mortgage interest rates remain low."

Affordable homes still have shrinking inventory
The one caveat to inventory growth is that buyers might need jumbo loans to purchase a new property on the market. More gains were seen in the middle and top third of home values. Meanwhile, there were declines for the lowest-priced homes in 28 of the nation's largest metro areas tracked by Zillow.

Humphries noted that this presents a challenge for first-time buyers, as they tend to shop in the less expensive market. Furthermore, those properties that are available are are selling at higher prices, as unyielding demand is driving home values up. The chief economist said he hopes the inventory growth seen for more expensive properties will soon be evident for affordable homes.

Although all-cash buyers still represent stiff competition for mortgage-dependent buyers, their presence is (fortunately for first-time home buyers) waning in the housing market, The Federal Savings Bank highlighted this fact in a June 24release titled “All-Cash Sales Declined During The First Quarter.”

New housing provides inventory aid
The U.S. Census Bureau released its May new residential construction report, which showed that newly built homes could have been a catalyst for the inventory gains. Privately owned housing completions rose 6.8 percent from April to May, increasing to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 897,000 units. There was a 24.8 percent gain compared to May 2013. Completions in the single-family housing market went up 2.1 percent month over month to a rate of 618,000 units.

Despite the rise in completed homes, there could be fewer builders breaking ground in the coming months. Declines were posted for housing starts and the number of building permits issued. These decreases were seen in the privately owned and single-family markets, but they were all single-digit drops.

'Under the Electric Sky' review

$

Except for electronic music aficionados, the appeal of "Under the Electric Sky" - a documentary about the 2013 Electric Daisy Carnival - will not be the music or the behind-the-scenes glimpses of celebrity DJs. [...] if you approach this documentary in a tolerant, anthropological frame of mind, it does have its rewards. You get to witness a foreign subculture, with its own aesthetics, values and heroes. [...] you get to meet people participating within it - people who talk about why this thing they're doing is not just great but transcendent. The Electronic Daisy Carnival is an electronic music festival that takes place in several cities, though in Las Vegas it's on an epic scale. There's a jolly couple in their 30s, a rather sweet young woman suffering from recurrent anxiety, a group of rowdy guys grieving the drug death of a close friend, and a half-dozen or so good-looking young people participating in group marriage. CEO Dawn Hudson and past presidents Hawk Koch and Tom Sherak spoke to branch membership committees encouraging them to consider diversity in their selections in previous years. But according to members involved in the process, this year's appeals were far less overt under current president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.

Up until about 2010, only about 20 or 25 percent of the new invitations typically went to women. Beginning in 2011, that number jumped to closer to 30 percent for two years, before passing it in 2013.

This year's crop is about 25 percent female, the smallest percentage in three years.

The 2014 invitees are also not as obviously weighted toward minorities and foreign-born filmmakers as last year's list, although the 11 invited directors include ones from Israel (Hany Abu-Assad), Italy (Sorrentino), Canada (Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve), Belgium (Felix van Groeningen) and Denmark (Thomas Vinterberg).

A year ago, the Board of Governors also voted to remove the caps that had held overall Academy membership below 6,000 for more than a decade. It caused the number of invitations to jump from 176 in 2012 to 276 in 2013, and pushed the number of voting members to 6,028.

The Documentary Branch was the principal beneficiary of the change: In the past it had typically invited about 10 new members each year, but last year it invited 42, partly to admit veteran filmmakers it had not been able to let in during the years of strict quotas. This year the branch invited 18.

The Casting Directors Branch, which was created last year and formed out of members-at-large who worked in casting, invited its first crop of members, and chose 22. That was the largest group of any branch except Short Films and Feature Animation, which chose 27.

Applications for membership must have been submitted by March 20, and each candidate must have been sponsored by two or more current members of the branch to which he or she is applying. Different branches have different requirements for membership: Writers, producers and directors, for example, are expected to have “at least two screen credits on films that reflect the Academy's highest standards,” while actors should have three such credits. Some other branches require a number of years of continuous work in films.

Oscar nominees and winners are automatically considered for membership.

Committees in each of the Academy's 17 branches met in the spring to consider candidates. On Tuesday night, the Board of Governors then reviewed the lists of recommended invitations submitted by each branch.

Those who accept the Academy's invitation will be welcomed at a new-members’ reception in September.
