Libertarian Richard Ebeling Examines the Significance of the Declaration of Independence and the State of Today’s Government Involvement

Midland, Michigan (PRWEB) July 02, 2014

In honor of Independence Day celebrations across the United States, Northwood University economist and noted libertarian thought leader Richard Ebeling has penned a new position paper, A Declaration of Independence from Big Government. The whitepaper is the latest addition to Northwood University’s Free Market Library, a comprehensive catalog of thought-leadership essays from university faculty and administrators.

This new essay examines the Declaration of Independence, looking at the history behind this venerable document, as well as the thought processes U.S. forefathers relied upon while drafting it in their ultimately successful efforts to break away from British rule.

“It is the founding document of the American experiment in free government,” notes Ebeling, an economics professor at Northwood University. “What too often is forgotten is that what the founding fathers argued against in the Declaration was the heavy and intrusive hand of big government. The founding fathers were making a revolution against government control, regulations and restrictions on the economic liberty of the people residing in the 13 colonies.”

Ebeling brings the reader back to contemporary times, reminding the reader to reflect upon the current state of legislative affairs, one in which he believes might just have come full circle

“The government in our own time continues to weave a network of control and regulation over all we do in modern America,” he says. “We need to ask, indeed, if we, too, need to declare our independence from big government.”

Ebeling is a well-noted authority on monetary economics and reform. While serving as vice president for The Future of Freedom Foundation (FFF), he co-edited and contributed to five books published by the FFF and wrote a monthly article and book review for FFF’s publication Freedom Daily. He also lectures widely on the problems of economic reform and change in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Ebeling received his B.A. in economics from California State University-Sacramento, an M.A. in economics from Rutgers University and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Middlesex in England.

He is slated to participate in two panel discussions at the upcoming FreedomFest 2014, July 9-12, in Las Vegas.

Shipshewana, IN (PRWEB) July 02, 2014

The Blue Gate Theater in the middle of Indiana's Shipshewana Amish country will stage the world premiere of their new musical “Josiah for President” beginning July 14 and running through December 13.

This musical, the third created by the Blue Gate, was adapted for the stage by its author, Martha Bolton. Bolton, who has written 87 books and worked for numerous comedians, also created the scripts for “Half-Stitched” and “The Confession.” Both are musical adaptions of New York Times Bestselling novels that have had successful runs at The Blue Gate Theater. Both “Confession” and “Half-Stitched” have gone on to be performed across the country for Tens of Thousands of theatre goers.

“Josiah for President” tells the story of Pennsylvania Amish farmer Josiah Stoltzfus and his run for president of the United States. Josiah is tapped as a write-in candidate by a former congressman who learned more from a visit with this simple Amish farmer than he did in his many years in office. The congressman decides that “someone with a little old-fashioned common sense, someone who's not afraid of rolling up his sleeves and getting his hands dirty” ought to be running the country.

Using his old campaign headquarters for a base, the congressman determines to introduce a new candidate to America – without Josiah’s consent or knowledge. But can a plain man of faith turn the tide of politics and become the leader of America, and what will he have to risk to do it?

Author Bolton wrote her first “book” at the age of 9. She has been a staff writer for Bob Hope and received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Music and Lyrics. She also has written for dozens of comedians and entertainers, including Phyllis Diller, Wayne Newton and Mark Lowry. Possibly the most interesting credential for writing “Josiah” comes from the fact she’s also helped write speeches for several Presidents.

“Josiah for President,” is published by Zondervan and has earned glowing reviews from readers on Amazon.com.

The Blue Gate Theater is honored to host the premier performance of this new musical, produced by Blue Gate Theater owner Mel Riegsecker and Dan Posthuma, with music by Wally Nason, who is also the director. The cast comes from across the United States, from Las Vegas to North Dakota to Virginia. Kyle Whitney, who also portrays Jan in “Half-Stitched,” is taking on the lead role of Josiah in his second season at The Blue Gate. Whitney is from Chicago.

Tickets for “Josiah for President” are on sale now by calling The Blue Gate Theater at 1-888-447-4725 or by visiting http://www.BlueGateTheater.com. Reported by PRWeb 6 hours ago.

California congressman and outspoken global warming skeptic will give a keynote address at the Ninth International Conference on Climate Change.

(PRWEB) July 02, 2014

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), vice chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, will be part of the opening night of the Ninth International Conference on Climate Change (#ICCC9) on Monday, July 7 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. He will deliver his keynote speech, titled “Global Warming as a Power Grab,” at 8:25 p.m. PDT.

“One of the traits of a fanatic is the willingness to conduct personal attacks, to limit debate, to use questionable facts and to seek government to impose policy on others,” Rohrabacher said.

Joe Bastardi, co-chief forecaster at Weatherbell Analytics and a frequent television guest for discussions about weather and climate, will precede Rep. Rohrabacher to deliver a keynote speech titled “When the Truth Is Found to Be Lies” at 8 p.m. PDT.

Both keynote presentations – and all three days of the conference – will be streamed live on the climate conference website starting at 7:45 p.m. PDT. The stream can also be viewed at CNSNews.com.

“We’ve live-streamed part of our climate conferences in the past, but this is the first time we’ve offered every session on a live-stream to anyone, anywhere in the world,” said Jim Lakely, director of communications at The Heartland Institute. “We’re pleased to partner with CNSNews.com to give this important conference even more exposure.

“There are no more excuses for those who say ‘the debate is over’ concerning climate science,” Lakely said. “The debate will be happening next week in Las Vegas, and you can watch it all with the click of a button.”

Global Warming Debate
The debate over the causes and consequences of global warming (or “climate change”) is one of the great controversies of the modern era. While environmental activists and some politicians claim “the debate is over” and call for immediate action to reduce man-made greenhouse gas emissions, others say the science points to only a very small human impact – too small to warrant concern – and the costs of trying to prevent global warming far exceed the benefits.

Ninth International Conference on Climate Change
The Ninth International Conference on Climate Change is expected to attract nearly 1,000 speakers, scientists, and guests willing to question whether man-made global warming is a problem worth addressing. The event has 32 cosponsors and features 60 prominent scientists and economists as keynoters or panelists.

Ten awards will be given during plenary sessions at the Ninth International Conference on Climate Change. For more information about the conference and a current list of award winners announced to date, visit http://climateconference.heartland.org.

An Interview with Frank Gruber

$

Frank Gruber probably doesn't sleep much. He co-founded Tech Cocktail in 2006. The company  has grown into a hub for the creative class, offering tech startup focused news, events, and resources. Frank is also a Venture Partner with Crystal Tech Fund. Frank currently lives in Las Vegas and Washington, D.C. but travels across the globe speaking, hosting events and helping entrepreneurs, startups, and technology communities amplify their local technology signal. I had a chance to sit down with him to talk about his first book, Startup Mixology: Tech Cocktail's Guide to Building, Growing, and Celebrating Startup Success.

*PS: What inspired you to write Startup Mixology? *

*FG:* I've always had a bit of the entrepreneur bug, but it still took me ten years to break free from my regular jobs and take the plunge on my own. Part of the reason was that there's so much advice out there and it's hard to figure out which to follow.

At the same time, our experiences over the last eight years at Tech Cocktail include thousands of interviews with entrepreneurs, some very early and some incredibly successful. There's a wealth of knowledge there that could have helped me when I was starting out, and I wanted to share it.

So I wrote the book I would have wanted to read ten years ago: an actionable, easy-to-read, step-by-step guide.

*PS: What kind of stories can readers find in the book?*

*FG:* Each chapter has one lead story, usually from someone we've interviewed at Tech Cocktail. Some of these interviews were hour-long fireside chats, so we get really deep into the details and the day-to-day of starting a business. My fellow Chicagoan Jason Fried is a huge bootstrapping advocate, so he told us about where that ethos comes from and how Basecamp puts it into practice. Laura Fitton (@pistachio) has this amazing network, so she explains her philosophy of relationships and how to cultivate them. Other entrepreneurs featured include Tony Hsieh of Zappos, Jessica Mah of inDinero, Travis Kalanick of Uber, and Matt Mullenweg of WordPress.

*PS: How is Startup Mixology different from other startup books?*

FG: It has llamas in it! Besides that, I like to think I tell it like it is. Each chapter has a "Harsh Reality" section, which tells stories of those terrible, what-can-go-wrong-will-go-wrong, worst-case scenarios. Entrepreneurs were honest enough to share with us what happens and how it feels when you totally offend your customers, lose thousands of dollars, or have to fire your friends. There's also a whole chapter on Failure.

*PS: Celebration isn't a concept that entrepreneurs usually talk about. Why is it so important to you? *

*FG:* Over the years, I've come to realize that celebration is a completely underutilized tool for startups. By celebration I don't mean huge parties or champagne popping, but recognizing the positive moments along the way. You can celebrate with a high five, an impromptu dance around the office, or a walk around the block. Taking a minute to pause and recognize the progress you've made gives you much more motivation to dive into the next task on your to-do list. Also, we believe in enjoying the startup journey at Tech Cocktail - if you're not having fun, what's the point?

*PS: What do you hope readers will take away from the book? *

*FG:* For established entrepreneurs, I hope Startup Mixology is a resource they can consult whenever they're struggling or looking for a little motivation. If you want a refresher on marketing or funding, you'll find it in the book. But sometimes all you need is a reminder that you're not alone, and we've all been there-and you'll find that there, too.

For readers who haven't quite taken the leap yet, I hope Startup Mixology inspires them to turn their ideas into action. I definitely belong to the "just do it!" camp-take a risk and see what happens. If you're talented, you can always find a regular job when you get back. Sometimes the bigger risk is not going after your dreams and regretting it later. Reported by Huffington Post 1 hour ago.

PBS' 'This Old House' Expert Warns Water Prices Will Skyrocket

PBS' 'This Old House' Expert Warns Water Prices Will Skyrocket The landscaping expert for PBS' home-improvement franchise This Old House predicts water will be $4 a gallon in order to "cut down on consumption."

This may sound alarmist, but PBS star Roger Cooke is dead serious. Some of the fastest-growing areas in the U.S. are in the Southwest and far West, in areas that are becoming unable to support residents in the style to which they've become accustomed--fountains, pools, lush green lawns and all.

Since 1978, This Old House (airs new episodes Thursdays on PBS--check local listings for date and time in your area) as been covering every topic imaginable facing homeowners while renovating residences in its home area of Boston and around the country.

Its companion show, Ask This Old House, lets viewers get answers to specific questions. But for its upcoming 13th season, Ask is doing something special to see just how thirsty the West really is, with the help of Cooke, TOH host Kevin O'Connor, and plumbing and HVAC expert Richard Trethewey

Explains producer Heath Racela, in an exclusive note sent to Breitbart News:

We are planning a special, themed episode to begin airing nationally on October 23 on PBS (it will be the fourth episode of our new season). The episode will focus on the Western drought that is affecting homeowners in California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and many other states. As always, we offer low-cost, practical solutions for homeowners that can make a big impact in this dry region.

The episode opens with Kevin and Richard touring Lake Mead (in Nevada), which is the largest man-made reservoir in the country, but is only at 40% capacity now! Richard discusses the challenge for drinking water and also hydropower generated at Hoover Dam, as the water levels continue to fall. Water conservation is a huge part of the solution and our experts spend this episode showing some key ways to conserve water.

Irrigation can be 60% of a Western homeowner's water bill, so Roger tackles the biggest offender -- lawns in the desert. Working with a local landscaper, Roger removes a water-guzzling lawn with a more desert-appropriate landscape, and he learns that gardening in the desert isn't just about cacti and succulents.

In our barn (headquarters), Kevin meets with Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore to learn more about origins of the drought and if this is a short-term or long-term problem.

In Los Angeles last month for the Daytime Emmy Awards, O'Connor and Trethewey sat down with Breitbart News at a diner in West Hollywood to discuss what they found when they visited Lake Mead. It supplies 90 percent of the water in Las Vegas, which is now paying the price for making the desert bloom.

"The whole issue in the West is no water," says Trethewy. "We saw Lake Mead down 60 to 100 feet."

According to a recent report from Las Vegas station KLAS-TV, the lake may soon drop below the current lowest level of 1,081 feet, which happened in 2010.

"It's predicted," the article says, "the lake could drop to 1,075 in April 2015."

And this is not just Nevada's problem.

"It's the same water source for a lot of places," says O'Connor. "It's a huge supplier for California, Nevada. Roger's story is tearing out the lawn, a huge consumer of water.

While Las Vegas is attempting to reduce water usage, Trethewey found that San Francisco is actually making it happen.

"It's all the same watershed," he says. "(In San Francisco), they're down to using 40 gallons per person per day, where the average is probably 65 to 80. They're down by half already, and with water restrictions."

Even so, a May 19 report in the San Francisco Examiner says, "...The City is edging closer to mandatory water rationing in the coming months."

This could mean no watering of outside plants, and a lot of sad-looking yards. But it doesn't have to be that way. Calling in from the current job site in Massachusetts, Cooke has common sense suggestions to help homeowners lower water bills and consumption.

"The first is to water smartly," he says. "If you're going to water, that means not in the middle of the day, when it's going to evaporate, or in such a fashion where there's more water running down the curb than there is going to your lawn or your plants."

He suggests using xeriscaping techniques, employing stone and gravel with ground covers, native plants, succulents, etc., that use less water and are more hardy in dry conditions.

As part of its Cash for Grass Rebate Program, Los Angeles County will pay homeowners $1 for every square foot of grass they remove, up to 5,000 square feet. Its tag line is "Take back your Saturday," and that's something Cooke agrees with.

"Grass is a great thing when you have a family," he says, "but really, the most time you spend out on your lawn is when you're cutting it."

Westerners with visions of landscaping more suited to the Northeast or Southeast may have to abandon the ideal of the perfect lawn, along with getting used to some other unappealing ideas.

A recent article in Slate on the current California debate over desalinization vs. purification came down financially and energy-wise on the side of purification, saying, "The conclusion here is easy: If drinking purified pee weirds you out, don't live in a desert."

If that came to pass, Trethewey assures Breitbart News that it's not that bad.

"At our Essex House project," he says, "I didn't do it on-camera, but I drank the water that had just come out of a self-contained sewage-treatment plant on site. It was like Perrier, just cheaper than Perrier.

"Didn't have as much fizz." Reported by Breitbart 4 minutes ago.

Skokie, Ill (PRWEB) July 03, 2014

The new Interlace LED suspension light fixture by LBL Lighting was chosen as the “Indoor Decorative” category winner at the 2014 LIGHTFAIR Innovation Awards®. Held this year at the Las Vegas Convention Center, LIGHTFAIR® International (LFI®) is the world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference.

Inspired by the sculptural nature of large suspension bridges, the Interlace suspension by LBL Lighting has a notched, aluminum outer ring to accommodate hand-strung, steel cables which create an intricate, interwoven pattern. The LEDs entrenched within its circular structure illuminate its inner design cables to create a truly spectacular fixture. Three suspension cables allow Interlace to be hung flat or at virtually any angle, and it can be hung in a group at varying heights and angles to create a dramatic installation, particularly in a commercial space. Its dimensions are 29.5” in diameter and 1.1” high.

The LFI Innovation Awards had 261 submissions from 135 companies that spanned 14 categories; each submission was judged by an independent panel of lighting professionals. The winners were awarded for product entries that “exemplified the best in innovative design and thinking.” The “Indoor Decorative” category included chandeliers, pendants, sconces and task lights.
