Annual conference provides groundbreaking approaches to treating patients with interrelated autoimmune conditions.
Malvern, PA (PRWEB) July 18, 2014
The inaugural Interdisciplinary Autoimmune Summit (IAS) brought together more than 150 gastroenterologists, rheumatologists, dermatologists, immunologists, internists, industry, and other allied healthcare professionals at The Mirage, Las Vegas, NV, June 20-22, 2014.
"IAS 2014 was a wonderful opportunity to meet and discuss best practices for our patients with immune-mediated inflammatory disorders (IMIDs) in a multidisciplinary setting,” shares IAS Steering Committee Member Lisa M. Grandinetti, MD, Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Director of the Dermatology Residency Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “The unique perspectives that each of the speakers and the audience participants brought to the table made this meeting particularly unique and valuable!"
Neal S. Birnbaum, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF and Director of the Division of Rheumatology at California Pacific Medical Center adds, "The best aspect of IAS was listening to speakers and interacting with attendees in specialties other than my own field of rheumatology. I heartily endorse the interdisciplinary aspect of the meeting." Dr. Birnbaum is also an IAS Steering Committee Member.
Over the course of the 2.5-day annual meeting, attendees and faculty debated, discussed, and shared groundbreaking approaches to treating patients with immune-mediated inflammatory disease.
Dr. April Abernethy, Director of Medical Programs at the National Psoriasis Foundation, one of IAS’s founding partners, explains, "IMIDs highlight the need for a holistic approach to disease management. IAS brings the latest research and clinical approaches across gastroenterology, dermatology, and rheumatology together into one educational opportunity and allows for meaningful dialogue with peers on how to better serve patients."
Noel R. Rose, MD, PhD, Professor of Pathology, Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, and Director at Johns Hopkins Center for Autoimmune Disease Research presented the keynote address. Dr. Rose, who is widely regarded as a pioneer in autoimmunity and autoimmune disease research, described IAS as the culmination of 40 years of work trying to bring these specialists together.
Cohosted by the Coalition of Rheumatology Educators (CORE) and The Dermatologist, IAS partnered with the National Psoriasis Foundation, the International Foundation for Autoimmune Arthritis, and the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association, and is endorsed by the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Gastroenterological Association Institute.
