Contestants (L-R) Tim Janus, men's division winner Joey Chestnut, and Matt Stonie are seen just after finishing the annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest at Coney[/caption] Hot-dog eating champs, backyard picnickers and small-town parade lovers pressed on with Fourth of July celebrations on Friday, some featuring less sizzle than usual after Hurricane Arthur dampened many Independence Day plans.

In Washington, President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, presided over a barbecue and concert on the White House South Lawn attended by members of the U.S. military and their families.

“Today immigrants from around the world dream of coming to our shores. Young people aspire to study at our universities. Other nations look to our support and leadership at times of disaster and conflict and uncertainty," Obama said. "And when the world looks to America, so often they look to all of you, the men and women of our armed forces.

“Today we honor all of you," he said.

Hurricane Arthur traveled up the East Coast but did not wash out the annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest in Coney Island, New York, where a slate of professional eaters competed for purses of $20,000.

World champion Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, 30, of San Jose, California, walked away with his eighth straight title after consuming 61 wieners and buns - short of his world record of 69 set in 2013. Runner-up Matt Stonie took down 56 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Chestnut proposed marriage to his girlfriend on stage to roars from the crowd of about 1,000 people just before the competition.

The women’s contest saw an upset, with rookie Miki Sudo, 28, of Las Vegas toppling reigning champion Sonya Thomas, eating 34 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

“I love watching the guys stuff their faces,” said Barbara Hicks, 43, of Queens.

Hicks said she intended to try the amusement park rides, including the famous Cyclone roller coaster and the newly opened state-of-the art Thunderbolt.

“We’re going to have fun no matter the weather,” she said.

The evening's fireworks show in New York City was ready to go off as scheduled, but police said the barge used to stage the display in New York's East River was moved south below the Brooklyn Bridge due to an expected high rip current.

PEOPLE 'WANT TO TRAVEL'

Roads were expected to be jammed during the busiest summer travel holiday weekend, with 41 million people traveling 50 miles or more from home, the American Automobile Association said.

That marks a 1.9 percent increase over the 40.3 million people who traveled this time last year, AAA said.

Travelers can be undaunted by the weather, even Hurricane Arthur, experts said.

"People do try to err on the side of keeping their vacation plans in place. They want to go. They want to travel," said AAA spokeswoman Heather Hunter.

Erin Hutchinson, 36, a marketer from Pittsburgh, visiting family in Maplewood, New Jersey, said she was taking her children, Ava, 9, and Kane, 4, to ice-cream eating contests and a dog show that had been moved inside because of the damp weather.

"We have an indoors backup plan," Hutchinson said.

With the storm approaching, towns from Ocean City, Maryland, to Nashua, New Hampshire, delayed July 4 fireworks displays until Saturday. Many towns in Connecticut put off festivities, while the famed Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular went off on Thursday, a day ahead of schedule, to beat the hurricane.

In California, a fast-moving wildfire near Julian, about 35 miles east of San Diego, destroyed 150 acres and two homes and prompted officials to cancel the local July 4 parade.

MMA Crowd Boos 'The All-American' on Fourth of July

MMA Crowd Boos 'The All-American' on Fourth of July They booed “The All-American” on the Fourth of July.

UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman and challenger Lyoto Machida weighed in Friday night for their UFC 175 scrap. The Brazilian looked especially cut and thin at 184.5 pounds. The champion, who appeared at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas to scattered boos, tipped the scales at 185. The Brazilian boo-birds declared their independence from local customs as they jeered the clean-cut Chris "The All-American" Weidman.

The pair shook hands before an intense staredown. The pay-per-view card starts at 10 p.m. Eastern on Saturday.

Machida, who boasts wins over light heavyweights Rashad Evans, Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, and Tito Ortiz, said that “185 is a good division for me.” Through a translator, he vowed a “good performance.”

Weidman, who electrified the UFC last year with two memorable stoppages of mixed-martial-arts legend Anderson Silva, called the Brazilian karateka a “really dangerous opponent.” The heavy-handed wrestler noted of the former light heavyweight champ, “He’s had the belt before.”

Other fights on the card include Uriah Faber versus Alex Caceres on the free-TV preliminaries. After more than a year layoff, Stefan Struve takes on Matt Mitrione in a main-card heavyweight clash. Ronda Rousey defends her woman’s title against Alexis Davis in the co-feature. All 22 fighters on the promotion’s annual summer spectacular made weight.   Reported by Breitbart 6 minutes ago.

Hillary Clinton and UNLV vs. The Students

$

UNLV is a city school in Las Vegas. It is an affordable school if you live in Nevada. If you are a resident existing student and want to take a full load next semester while commuting (public transit -- no parking pass) -- here is your breakdown:
UNLV has contracted with Hillary Clinton to speak at UNLV. Hillary Clinton will be getting $255,000 for the speaking gig. I guess that is the going rate.

If you take the $225,000 and divide it by 3270.05 you get 68.80629.

That means if Hillary Clinton did not show up for the gig almost 69 students would be able to get a free ride for the year from the foundation that contracted with Ms. Clinton.

I am not going to begrudge Hillary Clinton for getting paid. She will need the cash for her campaign-to-be-named-later.

The people I begrudge are the trustees of UNLV who are misusing the resources. The 69 students-to-be-named-later will not just be paying the 3270.05 for the tuition, but they will be paying interest on the loans they take out just to get there.

If those students can't get a gig after four years of school, that is a debt that will follow and accrue on the student forever. We don't believe in forgiveness or bankruptcy anymore - unless you are a Wall Street Firm.

It is not fair to just single out UNLV, this is a practice that is occurring across the country. Speakers are invited for big bucks and those big bucks are leveraged from students and the loans they will be paying forever.

I hope Hillary has something worth saying -- if only for the UNLV students. Reported by Huffington Post 8 hours ago.

West Virginia Secretary of State and U.S. Senate candidate Natalie Tennant (D) showed off her muzzleloader during a march with her campaign in the Ripley, W.Va. Independence Day parade.

Tennant tweeted a few photos of her with the gigantic rifle, which she often carries with her on the campaign trail:

Tennant, who will campaign with progressive Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on July 14, has been reluctant to lend any support to Senate legislation expanding background checks on gun purchases and maintains that any changes to gun laws should be made at the state level.

She has also tried to characterize her opponent, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), as not being strong enough on Second Amendment rights.

The photos come after a Las Vegas shooting spree in June and one near the University of California Santa Barbara campus in May. The city of Chicago also witnessed a very bloody July 4 weekend, with reports that over 60 individuals were shot.

On Monday, the gun control group founded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) announced that it would be surveying all federal candidates on gun safety issues as it considers which individuals to endorse or go after in the midterm elections.

HuffPost Pollster, which tracks publicly available opinion polls, shows Capito leading Tennant ahead of the November general election:

Despite Past Resistance, Nintendo Now Sponsoring Evo Fighting Game Tournament

Despite Past Resistance, Nintendo Now Sponsoring Evo Fighting Game Tournament In a surprising shift in policy, Nintendo is sponsoring this year's Evolution Championship Series fighting game tournament. On the official Evo website, a list of sponsors includes Nintendo's logo, indicating that the publisher has changed its stance toward the tournament. The company joins Capcom, Atlus, and Microsoft as sponsors

Notably, in 2013, Nintendo attempted to shut down the Super Smash Bros. portion of the competition, even after the community raised almost $100,000 to include it. The company eventually relented, but only after another fight to prevent the tournament organizers from broadcasting the Super Smash Bros. matches.

Now with the support of Nintendo, competitors will be playing Super Smash Bros. Melee at the tournament. Although Nintendo hasn't provided any statement on their sponsorship, it's possible that the company hopes to promote the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.

Evo 2014 takes place this weekend between July 11-13 in Las Vegas. In addition to Super Smash Bros. Melee, Evo will feature Ultra Street Fighter IV, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Killer Instinct, and several other games.

LeBron Cleveland
Has Been Optimized

The NBA world is buzzing right now with rumors that LeBron James is considering a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The rumors are spearheaded by a Yahoo Sports report claiming that LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, is trying to convince James to take his talents back to Ohio.

The report says Paul has confided to friends over the years that he’s on a mission to bring James back to Cleveland. He allegedly told Cavaliers officials to “offer no restraint” in their recruitment of James.

The Cavliers are reportedly encouraged by their recent meeting with Paul. The team’s pitch to Paul focused on the appeal of a trio of James, Kyle Irving, and Andrew Wiggins in Cleveland. The Cavs also noted that they have three first round draft picks in the 2015 draft to build their roster with.

Long time NBA writer Chris Sheridan reports that a number of important people in LeBron’s personal and professional entourage would like to see him return to Ohio.

“James is traveling today to Las Vegas,” Sheridan writes, “and a source who has been briefed on James’ free agency maneuverings told SheridanHoops that James’ inner circle, from his wife, Savannah to his agent, Rich Paul, to his best friends, Maverick Carter and Randy Mims, are unanimous in their belief that James’ best move is a return to the team he played for from 2003-2010.”

The Heat are still viewed by many as the favorites to land LeBron at this point, but that could easily change soon. The team drafted Shabazz Napier – LeBron’s favorite player in the draft – and have agreed to contract terms with versatile power forward Josh McRoberts. Pat Riley is expected to meet with James in the coming days in an attempt to sell him on his vision to improve the Heat’s roster. James says he has had "minimal contact" with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh since their season ended.

Small side note worth mentioning: The Cavaliers took down Dan Gilberts notorious open letter to LeBron James from their website today. The letter, which slammed LeBron for leaving Cleveland and said the Cavs would win an NBA title before LeBron did, had been on the team’s website for four years.

Soccer's Popularity Growing in U.S., You Can Bet On It

Soccer's Popularity Growing in U.S., You Can Bet On It Every new installment of the World Cup tournament resurrects the debate on the popularity of soccer in the United States.

Even NBA great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recently weighed in on the strange sports pro-con controversy. “I’m reminded of the end of Man of La Mancha, when Don Quixote lies dying, but is suddenly inspired to rise once more and proclaim, ‘Onward to glory I go!,’ the six-time NBA MVP wrote at Time. “And then he drops dead. Soccer has been proclaiming this impending U.S. glory for years, and while there are signs of life in the body, the prognosis is not good.”

History shows that World Cup pandemonium has little effect on America’s Major League Soccer viewership. However, the readings from one barometer clearly show increased interest in the kicking sport. According to gamblers, the popularity of soccer has grown in the United States.

David Pemberton serves as director of specialty games at the Rio in Las Vegas and sets the odds for all of the Caesar’s Entertainment line of casinos. While unable to give specific figures, he told Breitbart Sports, “For the month of June 2014 sports gaming as a whole tripled the volume of June 2010.”

Though the economy and factors outside of soccer may account for much of the spike in gambling from the first period four years ago to the second one now, evidence supports the idea that the growing popularity of European football in the United States plays a large part in the increase in dollars wagered.

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports operations at the Wynn Casino in Las Vegas, runs the book on everything from the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show to the Super Bowl. He confirmed that soccer betting is on the rise at his casino. Speaking strictly of soccer dollars, he told Breitbart Sports: “World Cup 2014 volume is up 30% from 2010.”

These wagering figures coincide with increased television ratings. According to the website TV by the Numbers, 2014 World Cup viewership is estimated to have increased by 21% over the 2010 games. Contests in which the U.S. competed against Portugal, Germany, and Belgium all drew viewers into the eight-digit levels. Several quarterfinal matches not involving the already-exited U.S. team similarly pushed viewership to previously unknown levels for ESPN and ABC.

With the Cup playing out in the Western Hemisphere, the games have been airing at very accessible times in the U.S., allowing average citizens to watch without adjusting their sleep schedules.

“As the English Premier League and other [leagues] have become more accessible on TV and as the Beckhams and Rooneys are becoming household names in the U.S.,” Pemberton tells Breitbart Sports, “soccer betting is reaching higher volume in the sports books.”

Only time will tell if the trend continues during World Cup 2018 in Russia. Though for now, if the mighty dollar is any indication, soccer’s popularity in America is growing dramatically.

You can bet on it.   Reported by Breitbart 4 hours ago.
