These graphics clearly reflect the political and personal drives that influenced Haring’s unique contribution to the Graffiti and Neo-Pop movements of the 80s.

Keith Haring’s artwork reflected the happenings of New York City’s Street culture in the 1980s and his drawings are universally recognized as iconic. He is well known for his use of black and white and of vibrant colors along with simplified figures that are easily recognizable as his own. Haring’s lines formed glyphs that could be read like an urban, tribal language — images that often addressed the archetypal experiences of birth, death, sex and war.  In 1985, he joined the international anti-apartheid movement against the oppressive and racially based power of the South African government. Haring’s work on the subject included paintings, a set of lithographs and a poster.  In each, he visually expresses the dissonance of a small white minority physically and politically controlling a much larger black majority.  Freedom, not just artistic freedom for him as an artist, but physical, mental, spiritual freedom for all, was an idea he addressed over and over again in his artwork, and he expressed how strongly he felt about the nature of control over others by saying “Control is evil.” MLG is proud to have available for acquisition one of Haring’s three lithographs from the ‘Free South Africa’ lithograph series — an important and enriching work from the artist’s oeuvre.

What Shootings Like Sandy Hook Say About Americans And Guns Watch VideoIn the five years since the deadly mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, scientists have been studying how Americans respond to these high-profile tragedies. Their findings show patterns in the way we buy and think about guns.

Researchers have noted jumps in gun purchases and gun company stocks after nearly every major mass shooting, including in San Bernardino, at Pulse nightclub in Orlando and in Las Vegas. According to a new study, the number of guns purchased during the first five months following the Sandy Hook school shooting spiked by 3 million.

But what drives this trend? Some psychologists think it might have to do with a phenomenon known as availability bias. This way of thinking causes us to dwell on a situation, often due to recent, extensive media coverage and an increase in discussion.

Availability bias might lead people to purchase firearms for their own protection, due to the fears of gun violence that mass shootings can induce.

It can also drive people to acquire guns out of fear that the mass shooting will incite action for stricter gun control, making it harder for them to purchase a firearm. This might also explain why the spike in gun purchases was smaller following the Las Vegas shooting than after those in San Bernardino and Orlando — then-President Barack Obama was more vocal about gun control than President Donald Trump.

But the increase in gun sales doesn't necessarily mean more Americans own firearms. According to a recent Gallup poll, about 42 percent of Americans own a gun, while 3 percent of Americans own a majority of the country's firearms. Reported by Newsy 27 minutes ago.

Thought of quitting after Rio disappointment: Mirabai

Newly-crowned weightlifting world champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu says she thought of quitting the sport after receiving flak for her failure to win a medal at the Rio Olympics.

"I was really low after the Olympics. It took me a lot of time to get over the disappointment. I even thought of giving up the sport and stop training. The comments in social media, the criticism against my coach really hurt me," said Chanu, who recently became the second Indian after Karnam Malleswari to win a World Championship gold medal at the worlds.

"I was thinking day and night how to get things right. I decided to do better than what I was doing because I knew that is the only way to stop people from talking. That was the only way to get over the hurt."

The 23-year-old from Manipur clinched Indias first gold at World Weightlifting Championship in 22 years after lifting a new world record of 194kg (85kg snatch and 109kg clean-and-jerk) at Anaheim, USA last month.

Chanu said she had to work on her technique and go for regular sessions with a psychologist to get over the loss and answer her detractors.

"I did really bad at the Olympics. I had failed in clean and jerk, so I discussed with my coach about it and brought few changes in my technique during the training," she said with a smile.

"My psychologist also played a big role. I used to go to my psychologist twice in a month but after the Olympics I started taking sessions every week and it really helped me."

Talking about the dope tests, Chanu said: "Every week, I am tested for doping by NADA and WADA takes my samples twice a month. After reaching Las Vegas, my blood and urine samples were taken and again it was collected during the championship also, so it was collected twice in a month."

Crestfallen after the Olympics, Chanu did not go home and decided to work on her clean and jerk at the National camp in Patiala, but the Indian hopes to visit her native place early next year.

"I will play at Railways event from December 11 and then there is National Championship in January. After that, I will speak to coach and hope to go home," she said.

Now that she has erased the ignominy of the Rio Olympics, Chanu has her eyes trained on the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games next year.

"It was my dream to win a gold at World Championship. Now that I have achieved it, my target is to win a medal at Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and 2020 Olympics," she signed off. Reported by Deccan Herald 7 hours ago.

FORT WORTH, Texas, Dec. 08, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On Saturday, Dec. 9, nearly 1,000 American Airlines team member volunteers will bring more than 1,600 children and spouses of fallen service men and women to Dallas-Fort Worth for five days of fun and fellowship at the 12th annual Snowball Express celebration. Upon arrival at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), families will be welcomed by American team member volunteers. During their visit, families will experience a Walk of Gratitude on Sunday, Dec. 10, at the Fort Worth Stockyards to honor their sacrifice. Later in the week, they’ll enjoy a “knight” of jousting fun at Medieval Times, a private concert by Academy Award-nominated actor Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band and much more.
