Same-sex marriage has been legal in Nevada since Oct. 9, but some Las Vegas wedding chapels are refusing to marry gay couples.
"The difference between a church and a place of worship and a wedding chapel is that a wedding chapel is a business so that is covered under the Public Accommodations Law of Nevada,” Tod Story, of the ACLU, told 8 News NOW (video below).
However, the Elvis Wedding Chapel says it will not marry gay couples.
"There is no story here,” said David, of the Elvis Wedding Chapel.
"I would be a hypocrite if I said I'm a Bible-believing person and yet I would perform marriage that believe is solely against God's law,” stated Dolly Deleon, the owner of the Vegas Wed Chapel.
Gay marriage became legal in Idaho on Oct. 15, but owners of The Hitching Post wedding chapel in Coeur d'Alene refuse to marry same-sex couples because they say it goes against their Christian beliefs.
Donald and Evelyn Knapp filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Coeur d’Alene on Friday in an effort to stop the city from enforcing a non-discrimination “public accommodation” ordinance from 2013, which now applies to gay marriage, reports the Spokesman-Review.
“Performing same-sex wedding ceremonies would thus force the Knapps to condone, promote and even consecrate something forbidden by their religious beliefs and ordination vows,” the Knapps' lawsuit states.
“The Knapps are thus under a constant, coercive and substantial threat to violate their religious beliefs due to the risk that they will incur the penalties of jail time and criminal fines for declining to speak a message and perform a wedding service that contradicts their religious beliefs and ministerial vows."
