Atlanta business and civic leaders celebrated Selig’s contributions to economic development and the region’s quality of life.
atlanta, ga (PRWEB) October 06, 2014
The Council for Quality Growth paid tribute to regional civic, philanthropic, business and community leader Steve Selig, president and Chairman of the Board of Selig Enterprises, with its 25th annual leadership award at the Four Pillar Tribute. This year’s Four Pillar event – which had record-breaking attendance – took place on October 2, 2014 at the Georgia World Congress Center.
“I'm pleased and enormously proud to receive this award,” shared Selig as he accepted the 2014 Four Pillar Award. “This is by far the most humbling day of my life.”
“In 2010, we had less than $500 million in new construction permits. Last year that number reached $2.1 billion,” said City of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed during the event. “No individual has done more than Steve Selig to make that vision a reality.”
“Steve is just a very unique guy that has great foresight,” said Bernie Marcus, Home Depot co-founder and fellow Atlanta philanthropist. “I think that in addition to being an entrepreneur, he’s very philanthropic. That combination makes a really good guy, and that’s what Steve Selig is.”
Paying tribute to Selig and his personification of the “Four Pillars” of leadership and success – quality, responsibility, vision and integrity – included:· Vince Dooley, former UGA Head Football Coach and Athletic Director;
· Larry Gellerstedt, President and CEO of Cousins Properties, Inc.;
· Doug Hertz, President United Distributors; and
· Mike Leven, President and CEO of the Las Vegas Sands.
“Steve came from good stock,” said Dooley. “And he’s taken all of the good qualities of his mom and dad, and he’s furthered them.”
“Steve Selig has not only been a personal friend of mine, but he’s been a real important factor in terms of building Atlanta into what it is today,“ said Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle. “Obviously the skyline is a great reflection of his effort and commitment.”
“Steve Selig and his family have been pillars of the real estate community in Atlanta for many years, and I am thrilled the Council for Quality Growth is recognizing Steve’s significant contributions to the industry and to the community,” said Gellerstedt. “I am honored to be a part of the event.”
Hertz and Gellerstedt also served as co-chairs of the event along with:· City of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed;
· Virginia Hepner, president and CEO of the Woodruff Arts Center;
· Steve Koonin CEO and part-owner of the Atlanta Hawks;
· Bernie Marcus of the Marcus Foundation;
· Jerome Russell, president of Russell New Urban Development; and
· Charlie Tickle, CEO of the Daniel Corporation
The theme of the evening was “By Doing Right,” drawn from Selig’s mother’s maxim that “you can never do wrong by doing right.” Selig has embodied this motto in all of his pursuits from business, to the arts, to politics to his faith and family. He has grown Selig Enterprises, the Atlanta real estate firm founded in 1918. He has served as president of The Temple, the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta and the American Jewish Committee. He co-founded Southern Promotions and Music Midtown, and he currently serves on the boards of the Woodruff Arts Center and the Alliance Theater. Selig served as Deputy Assistant to the President of the United States under Jimmy Carter as his Chief Liaison with the business community, and he played a prominent role in Atlanta’s hosting of the 1988 Democratic National Convention.
About Steve Selig
Tracing his real estate roots back to 1918 with his grandfather Ben Massell's real estate transactions, Steve attributes his success to the solid foundation left to him by his parents and grandparents. Steve Selig assumed the helm at the company. As he began to lead the company he called the senior staff together, reminded them of the family motto and told them that the company would continue to move forward by always "doing right". Steve Selig currently serves as President and Chairman of the Board of Selig Enterprises and is Chairman of the Board of AAA Parking, a Selig subsidiary.
Prior to assuming the leadership of Selig Enterprises, Selig was appointed Deputy Assistant to the President of the United States under Jimmy Carter as his Chief Liaison with the business community. Once he returned to Atlanta, he co-founded Southern Promotions, now Concert Southern Promotions, and was instrumental in creating Music Midtown.
Selig currently serves on the boards of the Woodruff Arts Center, University of Georgia Foundation, the Buckhead Coalition and the Alliance Theatre. Steve is a past participant in Leadership Atlanta and has served on the Board of Directors or as a Trustee for Central Atlanta Progress, Wachovia Bank of Georgia, the National Kidney Foundation, Spelman College and the Lovett School. He also serves as Honorary Consul of Denmark in Atlanta.
Both through financial support and active leadership roles, the Seligs are active in the Jewish community. Steve is a past president of The Temple and The Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta and the American Jewish Committee. He is also a Board Member for the Anti-Defamation League Atlanta. Steve is past National Campaign Chair for the Jewish Federations of North America and presently serves on its Executive Committee. He also holds a position on the national board as Honorary Vice President for the American Jewish Committee.
