Digital comics and graphic novel usage increased fourfold in less than a week after being added to Houston Public Library's mobile app.
Sunnyvale, CA (PRWEB) July 31, 2014
Boopsie, Inc., the leading mobile platform for libraries worldwide, began offering digital comics and graphic novel catalog subscription services in June. The digital catalog subscription to comics has quickly driven a dramatic increase in circulation for Houston Public Library. In just a week after the integration went live, there was a 400% increase in the average daily digital graphic novel and comics downloads.
“Houston offered digital comics and graphic novels to their patrons via a desktop browser prior to adding Boopsie’s integration to their mobile app,” says Bryan Murray, Director of Account Management. “However, once we integrated their digital collection into their library’s mobile app, subscription use exploded! In a week, the average daily circulation of their digital graphic novels increased fourfold. For example, on the single day of July 23rd, there were more comics checked out from Houston Public Library via their mobile app than there were via desktop access to the same catalog during the entire first three months of 2014.”
The digital comics and graphic novel subscription provides an instantly expanded catalog of over ten thousand titles, representing novels of interest to children through adults. The subscription makes the entire catalog available to patrons--but, libraries only pay when titles are checked out--which alleviates librarians of burdensome and risky title by title purchase decisions in the rapidly changing world of comics and graphic novels. Boopsie’s digital comics catalog is available to libraries in packages of credits that are available to all interested libraries and can be integrated with a library’s mobile app from Boopsie and also be made available via the desktop.
Houston Public Library was the first library to provide their patrons with access to their digital comics and graphic novel collection via their mobile app. The integration, which launched on June 26th, was demonstrated at the American Library Association’s Annual Conference in Las Vegas, where it received strong interest from public and academic libraries looking for innovative ways to deliver relevant content in demand by patrons and students.
The dramatic increase in usage makes sense; graphic novels and comics have been known to “out-circ” popular young adult novels. These comics and digital graphic novels can be simultaneously checked out, and they do not “wear out”; physical comic books only last for 20-40 circulations.
“Reading a digital comic book on a mobile device is a great experience and the technical aspects of the integration were executed superbly,” says Boopsie CEO Tony Medrano. “We are glad to be able to help Houston Public Library’s collection development and outreach efforts geared towards younger patrons, and to enable them deliver a rapid and sustained increase in their circulation with minimal resources.”
