LAS VEGAS (ABC 4 Sports) - The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Utah Jazz 86-77 in the Samsung NBA Summer League 2014 Tournament. The Spurs improved their record to 4-1 in the summer desert classic while the Jazz are now 2-2.
San Antonio's offensive output was led by Austin Daye with 20 points while Deshaun Thomas added 14 points off the bench. The Jazz were led by Rodney Hood with 19 points while Brock Motum added 14 off the bench.
In the opening quarter of play, the Jazz jumped out to an early lead and led 17-16 at the end of the period. Utah's offensive was led by Rudy Gobert who tallied eight points in seven minutes of play. Thomas chipped in nine points for San Antonio off the bench in eight minutes.
Utah opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run opening up an eight-point lead however the Spurs answered with a run of their own and took their first lead of the ball game at 33-31 with 1:09 left to play in the half. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter with the Jazz coming out on top 36-35 as the time expired. Daye led the Spurs with 10 points in the quarter while Hood added nine for the Jazz.
The Spurs opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run opening up an eight point lead before the Jazz scored their first points of the quarter at the 7:10 mark on a Trey Burke jump shot. The Jazz regained the lead with 1:16 left in the period on an Ian Clark jump shot. The Jazz finished on top at the end of the quarter leading 54-53 heading into the final minutes of play. Motum led the Jazz with nine points in the quarter while Vander Blue tallied seven for the Spurs.
Knotted up in the fourth quarter at 75, the Spurs closed out the game on an 11-2 run to seal the victory.
