The NBA world is buzzing right now with rumors that LeBron James is considering a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The rumors are spearheaded by a Yahoo Sports report claiming that LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, is trying to convince James to take his talents back to Ohio.
The report says Paul has confided to friends over the years that he’s on a mission to bring James back to Cleveland. He allegedly told Cavaliers officials to “offer no restraint” in their recruitment of James.
The Cavliers are reportedly encouraged by their recent meeting with Paul. The team’s pitch to Paul focused on the appeal of a trio of James, Kyle Irving, and Andrew Wiggins in Cleveland. The Cavs also noted that they have three first round draft picks in the 2015 draft to build their roster with.
Long time NBA writer Chris Sheridan reports that a number of important people in LeBron’s personal and professional entourage would like to see him return to Ohio.
“James is traveling today to Las Vegas,” Sheridan writes, “and a source who has been briefed on James’ free agency maneuverings told SheridanHoops that James’ inner circle, from his wife, Savannah to his agent, Rich Paul, to his best friends, Maverick Carter and Randy Mims, are unanimous in their belief that James’ best move is a return to the team he played for from 2003-2010.”
The Heat are still viewed by many as the favorites to land LeBron at this point, but that could easily change soon. The team drafted Shabazz Napier – LeBron’s favorite player in the draft – and have agreed to contract terms with versatile power forward Josh McRoberts. Pat Riley is expected to meet with James in the coming days in an attempt to sell him on his vision to improve the Heat’s roster. James says he has had "minimal contact" with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh since their season ended.
Small side note worth mentioning: The Cavaliers took down Dan Gilberts notorious open letter to LeBron James from their website today. The letter, which slammed LeBron for leaving Cleveland and said the Cavs would win an NBA title before LeBron did, had been on the team’s website for four years.
