ABU DHABI – When a Chinese woman hugged a male in public, police promptly arrested her on suspicion of being a prostitute.
The woman – who was an employee at the Emirates Palace hotel, and not a prostitute – was holding a birthday party in park with a Chinese woman and three Nepalese men, all of whom worked with her at the hotel.
When one of the men presented the woman with a birthday present, she hugged him.
In a severe misunderstanding, a police officer on the lookout for street prostitutes mistook the woman’s intentions.
“Naturally, after her colleague gave her a gift she thanked him and hugged him. When CID officers saw this they exaggerated it,” said lawyer Faayza Moussa.
The officer arrested both Chinese women, who were then convicted of prostitution at the Criminal Court.
Both women were sentenced to jail and deportation.
At a hearing on Monday, Moussa emphasized the women’s good character and clean records. Moussa went on to state that both women “are even virgins, which shows their conservative backgrounds.”
“The two women were students at the most prestigious university that teaches hospitality and tourism in China. They come from well-known, prestigious families and were sent on a scholarship to Las Vegas due to their high grades and food discipline,” Moussa explained.
Moussa also noted that the women had not been provided with a translator at the police station.
The case was adjourned.
