This week's Top 10 homes spotlight at TopTenRealEstateDeals.com includes a look at the upcoming auction of Jack Klugman's California home going to auction on July 27th, an underground Las Vegas home built in the 1960s as a nuclear fallout shelter for sale for $1.7 million, and Howard Hughes' Lake Tahoe Cabin available at $19.5 million.

Jack Klugman's California Auction

Award winning star of stage, film and television, Jack Klugman is best known for his role in “The Odd Couple,” one of the 1970’s most popular TV shows. Klugman was also a big fan of thoroughbred racing, engaging in breeding and racing his own horses. During this time he built a horse training facility on 40 acres in the wine country of Temecula, California, to train his own horses. When his horse, Jaklin Klugman, came in third in the 1980 Kentucky Derby, he said it was the biggest thrill in his life.

His Temecula horse breeding and training facility took up most of Klugman’s free time so he built an 8,920 square foot Spanish-style home there in the grand old Hollywood tradition. The home has 5 bedrooms and 8 full baths with large spaces for entertaining both indoors and out. The main living area has vaulted beamed ceilings and a large curved staircase to the open second floor. Also on the property are four guest homes, a five hole golf course, pool and cabana, a koi pond, a vet clinic as well as many variable use barns, two riding arenas and multiple stalls.

Jack Klugman’s thoroughbred ranch previously listed at $12 million goes to auction on July 27th. The opening bid will start at $2.99 million.

Las Vegas Underground Mansion

Avon cosmetics executive Girard Henderson built his underground Vegas vacation home in the 1960s as a nuclear fallout shelter. It was an era after the Cuban missile crisis when everyone in this country feared a nuclear attack and many who could afford it were busy building underground bomb shelters as fast as they could.

Henderson probably topped them all with his 16,936 square foot, 5 bedroom, 6 bath elegant home that contained the best features, architecture and decor of the era. He thought of everything from a sauna to an outdoor free-form swimming pool surrounded by mountain boulders. In addition to the privacy of being underground, it is located under the caretaker’s house on a gated 1.05 acres of land.

Howard Hughes' Lake Tahoe Cabin

It’s only natural that when we hear or read the name Howard Hughes that we think of his wealth, his massive seaplane Spruce Goose, and his heavily publicized reclusiveness. Hughes was, however, a man of many achievements, including the many innovations he brought to the aircraft industry, such as inventing the first retractable landing gear and breaking numerous speed records in aircraft that he designed. A highly successful businessman, Hughes was quick to help people in need and his philanthropic contributions for medical research were prolific.

Hughes’ enchanting log cabin at the edge of Lake Tahoe is the essence of the rustic cabin experience. Built in 1934 by skilled log crafters and well maintained through the years, it is located on over 5.5 gated acres with 500’ of Crystal Bay waterfront. The main house consists of 2,518 square feet with five bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. The large vaulted, beamed great room contains a massive stone fireplace and water views. The guest house, built in 1940, is 1,343 square feet with two bedrooms and two baths, also with commanding views of the lake and stone fireplace. The property has a four-car garage, pier, buoy and large meadow.
