Nicolas Cage's daring as actor brings out best, and worst

The always-busy actor's work in David Gordon Green's new, Southern Gothic "Joe" is among his most settled and centered in years, putting lie to the Andy Samberg "Big Bang Theory"-style impressions of him as nothing but a wild man. Cage has 24 movies that have scored lower than 40 percent on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. [...] he has been nominated for or won Oscars, Independent Spirits, BAFTAs and many other honors, and the average domestic gross for his 54 features is a very healthy $67 million, when adjusted for ticket-price inflation. Rotten Tomatoes score: 88, domestic gross: $3.4 (All grosses are in millions, domestic, and adjusted for ticket-price inflation, per Box Office Mojo) Raising Arizona (1987): This bolt-from-the-blue crime-and-parenting comedy is a cult classic now, but wasn't entirely warmly received on arrival. Cage was nominated for an Independent Spirit - and this movie is his highest-rated by Metacritic users (8.8). Deadfall (1993): Directed and co-written by Cage's brother, Christopher Coppola, and featuring James Coburn, Peter Fonda and Charlie Sheen, it holds a rare 0-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. NSFW highlights of Cage's, shall we say, extreme performance have been captured on YouTube. Leaving Las Vegas (1995): Despite its rather cinematic scenario (Cage's suicidal alcoholic intends to drink himself to death with the help of Elisabeth Shue's hooker with a heart of gold), it's one of his most real-feeling films. Cage earned Oscar, SAG and BAFTA nods, and one from the Visual Effects Society - for best performance by an actor in an effects film. The Weather Man (2005): Cage says, I mean, look, everybody in town was so excited about the script. ... Bangkok Dangerous (2008): This remake of the Thai cult classic stumbles badly despite having the same directors as the original. The film is representative of a number of lurching vehicles (such as "Trespass,""Season of the Witch" and "Stolen") that scored below 20 on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed from $24.8 million down to $300,000. Is that correct? I had taken a year off and was being extraordinarily selective about what I wanted my next movie to be. Because I'd taken all that time off, it was important that I took as much time with the building of the character as I could. Reported by SFGate 3 hours ago.
