LAS VEGAS (ABC 4 Sports) - Utah Valley University is two wins away from making history.
The Wolverines take on Idaho in the WAC Tournament semifinals Friday night at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. With a victory over the Vandals and over the winner of the New Mexico State, Cal State Bakersfield game, and the Wolverines will be headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever.
"I have a group that has a good mindset," said head coach Dick Hunsaker. "They're a group of kids that have a good mentality and have some humility. They appreciate the position they're in, and they're taking it all in."
"That would be incredible," said forward Zach Nelson about the Wolverines hopes of going to the Big Dance. "All I can think about is Idaho, but looking ahead, that would be something special for our school."
"There's a lot of excitement," said guard Mitch Bruneel. "It's pretty cool to be in our first year in the WAC and be the number one seed and do well."
UVU has beaten Idaho twice before this season, and if they put on a shooting performance like they did against Texas-Pan American, setting a WAC Tournament record 71 percent from the field, they should be headed to the championship game.
"Shooting can be contagious," said Hunsaker. "If you're tough-minded, you should be able to come out and stay hot. But if you're a little bit weak-minded and relax, you could lose your edge."
Four local teams came to Las Vegas for their respective conference tournaments, but while BYU, Utah and Utah State are all gone, UVU is the last team standing.
"We're still in it," said Nelson. "And we're in it to stay too." Reported by abc4 3 hours ago.
