The largest antique, trade-only event reports increased attendance.

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) June 18, 2013

U.S. Antique Shows, a division of GLM and the world’s largest producer of antique shows, recently hosted an impactful discussion regarding issues with old European cut diamonds to a capacity room on the opening day of the Las Vegas Antique Jewelry & Watch Show, May 30-June 2. The forum titled, “New Issues with Old European Cut Diamonds” included panelists Doug Liebman of Douglas M. Liebman Estate Jeweler, Michael Goldstein of Michael Goldstein, Ltd., Ben Hakman with OGI Tech Inc., Al Gilbertson with GIA and Richard Buonomo from Richard Buonomo Ltd., and was moderated by Ezriel Rapaport of The Rapaport Group. The Rapaport Group was also the presenting sponsor of the forum.

At the heart of the issue is how diamonds, cut long before today’s standards, are graded by laboratories around the world. “The current GIA cut grading standards have created great confusion in the consumer marketplace,” explained Michael Goldstein, Michael Goldstein Ltd. “The conference held at the Las Vegas Antique Jewelry & Watch Show opened a discussion about this topic in order to find solutions.”

Panelists discussed the roles of the laboratories that currently issue grading reports on the old European cut diamonds and discussed ways to improve how the stones are assessed. “My expectations of this forum were boosted by the significant input by my co-panelists and industry experts in attendance, which gives me hope that an answer will come this year,” said Doug Liebman, president of Douglas M. Liebman Estate Jeweler. “The legacy of the cutters who toiled to produce these historical diamonds is not only our responsibility, but the need to preserve value and honor their labors should lead us to decisively correct reports which Robert Shipley and the pioneers of gemology would have expected of us.”

The show is already discussing topics for additional forums for the 2014 show. “As the only show producer focusing on the unique needs of the antique, estate and vintage jewelry and watch industry, U.S. Antique Shows was proud to host this forum,” said Dan Darby, group show director. “We hope this forum is the catalyst that helps the key players in the antique diamond industry reach a consensus as to how these diamonds should be rated.”

Ezriel Rapaport also announced that The Rapaport Group has created a special email address, OldCuts(at)diamonds(dot)net, for interested parties to continue the conversation and share their concerns regarding these very special stones. “The recent forum, proved to be very successful, with many influential people attending and expressing their points of view,” said Ezriel Rapaport, director of global trading for the Rapaport Group. “It is a pleasure to be working with the Antique Show to support these discussions and assist the industry in better defining and promoting old European cut diamonds in the trade. We look forward to working with industry leaders and the GIA on this important issue and developing a consensus to help increase overall consumer confidence regarding old European cut diamonds.”

The video of the complete forum is being finalized and should be available at http://www.VegasAntiqueJewelry.com very soon.

The 2013 Las Vegas Antique Jewelry & Watch Show saw increased attendance of 5% over the 2012 show. Dealers reported that earrings and vintage diamond rings with platinum settings were some of the top sellers. Opals and aquamarine gemstones proved to be some of the hottest trends on the show floor.

Next up for U.S. Antique Shows will be the New York Antique Jewelry & Watch Show, July 26-29 at the Metropolitan Pavilion. This event opens two days before the JA Summer Show.
