How dangerous air bags can find their way into used cars

LAS VEGAS — A Nevada crash that nearly killed a young woman has exposed a hole in the government’s efforts to get dangerous Takata air bag inflators off the road: Dorado, 18, is among nearly 200 people injured or killed by the inflators, which can explode when the chemical propellant inside degrades. Dorado’s father, Jose, bought the car for her in March 2016 so she could get to and from her job at a customer service call center, attorneys for the family said Wednesday. According to AutoCheck, a service that tracks vehicle histories, the car was given a salvage title, repaired and resold in Las Vegas last spring. “What there should be is a program that prevents old air bags from being recycled,” said Michael Brooks, acting director of the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety. In testing, inflators taken from older Hondas had a 50 percent chance of blowing apart, prompting the automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to issue desperate pleas for people to get them replaced. Unlike most other air bag makers, Takata used the chemical ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate the bags in a crash. [...] the chemical deteriorates over time when exposed to heat and humidity, causing it to burn too fast and blow apart a metal canister. Morrison said she doesn’t know if the elder Dorado checked the Accord’s vehicle identification number in a government database of recalled vehicles to see if it had any unfixed recalls. The federal government has no authority over used car sales and cannot stop air bags from being resold, a safety agency spokeswoman said. Brooks said people should be suspicious of cars with salvage titles because there is no way of knowing where the parts came from or the quality of the repair work. Reported by SFGate 3 hours ago.

TVU One Mobile Uplink Solution With HEVC Sets New Bar With 0.5 Second Latency and Greater Efficiency Through Less Bandwidth Use; Units Already Shipping, With Orders From Multiple Customers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA (PRWEB) April 20, 2017

TVU Networks, the global technology and innovation leader in live IP video solutions, announced today the immediate availability of its new TVU One with HEVC mobile IP newsgathering transmitter, which supports the H.265/HEVC video compression standard. TVU One with HEVC will be shown for the first time in its booth #C3739 in the Central Hall during NAB 2017 in Las Vegas next week.

The introduction of TVU One with HEVC follows the October 2016 introduction of the rackmount MLink TE4500 H.265/HEVC and 4K encoding solution at the NAB Show New York convention. The MLink live video uplink provides cellular 4G LTE transmission capabilities to satellite and microwave vehicles, vans and trucks.

The TVU One with HEVC cellular mobile solution uses both HEVC video compression and TVU’s patented Inverse Statmux Plus (IS+) transmission algorithm - which transmits HD quality video with half-second latency. TVU One with HEVC is available with embedded modems and can transmit simultaneously over multiple connections, including cellular, microwave, satellite, BGAN, WiFi, and Ethernet.

“IP-based video delivery is advancing at a breakneck pace right now, and our continuing rollout of H.265 supported video solutions is intended to take advantage of the improved compression and data management inherent in HEVC encoding,” said Paul Shen, CEO, TVU Networks. “The compression is much more efficient, particularly when combined with our IS+ technology. By taking advantage of both, the TVU One with HEVC sets a new standard for latency of just 0.5 seconds – even in situations where transmission is being done from inside a moving vehicle. It uses less data, with less overhead and performs with even greater stability than ever before.”

The TVU One with HEVC is already shipping, with orders for the compact, HEVC-compatible IP transmitters from the nationwide Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) network. The New York bureau of TBS and RKB Mainichi Broadcasting Corp. (RKB) - a sub key station of the TBS network based in Fukuoka, Japan – have ordered multiple TVU One with HEVC units for their field operations.

TBS has been a TVU customer since 2013, when they started using TVU for mobile newsgathering. In January of last year, they began using TVU One mobile transmitters at network headquarters and international bureaus, including New York City, Washington, DC, London, Beijing, Bangkok, Seoul, and Moscow, for mission-critical news gathering.

“We’ve always been impressed with the TVU’s stability, IS+ technology, fast start up, and the company’s 24/7 customer support,” said Mr. Shiho Akagawa, News Operations Manager, at the New York bureau of TBS. “We’ve always been extremely comfortable using TVU products. Their fast customer support response time, even for minor issues, is incredibly helpful, especially when we’re shooting from the field and every second counts. Now, with H.265 support, we’re assured of even higher picture quality at a lower bit rate, which means we’ll be able to produce even more live shots and more file transfers from the field. TVU continually updates the feature set to respond to our requests. The TVU One gives us everything we’ve wanted – multi-band embedded modems, long battery life, multi-WiFi with smartphone control – all in one compact package.”

Weighing just 2.2 pounds, TVU One with HEVC offers a robust set of functions designed to fit the needs of any size live video broadcaster. It delivers industry-leading video transmission resiliency and high-definition picture quality within an ultra-compact and rugged hardware chassis. With TVU One with HEVC, broadcasters can fully leverage the versatility of a small, lightweight, IP-based high-definition video field transmitter without sacrificing performance, features or picture quality.

TVU will make its first appearance in the Central Hall this year, moving from its traditional location in South Hall. This hall will become TVU’s home at the LVCC for future NAB shows.

NAB 2017 runs from April 22 through the 27th at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC).

Already in use by hundreds of leading broadcast organizations around the world, the TVU Networks family of IP transmission solutions give broadcasters and organizations a powerful and reliable tool to distribute live video content to broadcast, online and mobile platforms. The TVU Networks suite of solutions has been used to deliver professional-quality live HD footage of a number of important events around the world including the World Cup, both Summer and Winter Olympic Games, U.S. presidential elections, natural disasters, the 2013 Papal conclave, the Super Bowl, the 2015 Papal visit to the United States and several international sporting events. Trump's inaugural committee raised a record $106.7 million, many donors have significant matters pending before the U.S. government

$

Large U.S. companies and their executives helped President Donald Trump raise a record-setting $106.7 million for inauguration festivities in January, according to a U.S. government filing released on Wednesday.

That tally more than doubled the prior 2009 record of $53.2 million for President Barack Obama's first inauguration, which had topped the previous 2005 record of $42.3 million for President George W. Bush, government records showed.

The biggest donor by far to Trump's inauguration was Sheldon Adelson, casino magnate and founder of Las Vegas Sands Corp . He gave $5 million, according to the 58th Presidential Inaugural Committee's filing with the Federal Election Commission. Adelson declined comment.

Many of the companies that donated to Trump, a Republican, have significant matters pending before the U.S. government or have been invited to White House events.

Many of the companies which made donations to the 2017 event also donated to Obama's prior inauguration.

For example, aerospace and defence groups Boeing Co and Lockheed Martin Corp each donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration fund, the filing said.

Boeing had donated $1 million to the 2013 Obama inauguration, according to the OpenSecrets website run by the Center for Responsive Politics, a campaign finance watchdog.

Money donated to the Trump inaugural committee falls into two categories, said Larry Sabato, political analyst at the University of Virginia.

"It's either make-up money or it's a continuation of support by people who are invested in Trump. You don't give this kind of money to get a few tickets to inaugural balls," he said.

Trump publicly criticized both Boeing and Lockheed Martin before his inauguration. In Twitter messages he said costs on Boeing's new Air Force One plane were "out of control" and urged the federal government to "Cancel order!"

Trump in December sent a Twitter message saying the cost of Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighter jet was also "out of control."

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said on Wednesday that inaugurations have "pretty much been a nonpartisan activity ... This is a time-honored tradition, and I think a lot of Americans and companies and entities are proud to support the inaugural."

Financial services companies and executives were among the $1-million donors to Trump's big festivities, including Charles Schwab, chairman of the board of Charles Schwab Corp, Bank of America Corp, financier Henry Kravis and Cantor Fitzgerald Chairman Howard Lutnick. Their industry is eager for Trump to roll back regulatory reforms put in place after the 2008 financial crisis.

Coal and oil companies were also prominent donors. Clifford Forrest, owner of the Rosebud Mining Co, gave $1 million.

AT&T gave nearly $2.1 million in cash and services. It is seeking approval from the Trump administration to acquire Time Warner Inc. AT&T donated $4.6 million to the 2013 Obama inauguration, according to OpenSecrets.
"For many years, AT&T has contributed to our nation's presidential inaugural celebrations," said AT&T spokesman Mike Balmoris.

Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Kravis declined comment. Bank of America, Charles Schwab, Forrest and Lutnick did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Watch: This flying taxi takes off like a chopper then flies like a plane

Flying cars are ready for take off.

The first test flight of one of the first crops of flying cars to make it off the ground shows it taking off from the ground just like a helicopter and then zooming through the air like a plane.

The Lilium jet claims to be the first electric vehicle to use VTOL (vertical take off and landing) technology and the namesake company believes it's ushering a new era of on-demand air transport.

*Read more*: Aeromobil's futuristic but very real flying car is about to be revealed

Lilium's flying car, which it thinks is likely to have legs (or wings) as a taxi service, can fly at 300kmh and across a 300kmh range. That could get you from Manhattan to JFK airport in just five minutes, compared to a 55 minute car ride.

The firm, backed with around £9m in cash from venture capital investors including Atomico, said the two seater pod-like vehicle has been put through "rigorous" testing over the skies of Germany.

The success of the prototype is making way for a larger five-seater design better suited for ride (or should that be sky?) hailing.

“Seeing the Lilium Jet take to the sky and performing sophisticated maneuvers with apparent ease is testament to the skill and perseverance of our amazing team," said co-founder and chief executive Daniel Wiegand.

*Read more*: It's lift off for Uber's flying cars with a major hire from Nasa

"We have solved some of the toughest engineering challenges in aviation to get to this point. The successful test flight programme shows that our ground-breaking technical design works exactly as we envisioned."

The car/plane is low emission and can land almost any where there is a small open space, needing minimal infrastructure, and it consumes 90 per cent less than drone-style flying cars, such as the Ehang.

*WATCH: The Lilium Jet take off like a helicopter and fly like a plane*

Lilium is not the only company working on flying cars.

Just today pre-orders opened for the Aeromobil, a vehicle which can be driven on the road and take off down a runway into the skies, though it has yet to go into production.

Chinese firm Ehang last year demonstrated its driverless personal drones which are being tested in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile Uber made a major hire from Nasa to lead its own flying car plans. Reported by City A.M. 9 hours ago.
