Spring Hope, NC, May 24, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hemp, Inc. (OTC PINK: HEMP), a global leader in the industrial hemp industry with the largest multipurpose industrial hemp processing facility in the western hemisphere, announced today that its strategic growing partner, “Veteran Village Kins Community Arizona, Inc.,” was featured in an article by The Kingman Daily Miner regarding its veteran-focused business project taking shape in Mohave County, Arizona. The Kingman Daily Miner is a local newspaper serving Kingman, Arizona and Mohave counties.

Hemp, Inc. announced earlier this month that Veteran Village Kins Community Arizona, Inc., had completed installation of the solar and wind-powered energy system for its 500-acre Veteran Village Kins Community in Golden Valley, Arizona.  The Veteran Village Kins Community is designed to grow hemp and produce cannabidiol (CBD) products to benefit veterans as well as generate revenue for Hemp, Inc., the Veteran Village, and individual veterans living in the community.

*To see the recent Veteran Village Kins Community videos, visit Bruce Perlowin's **personal Facebook page **for the week of May 14, 2018.*

The article, “Hemp farm under development in Golden Valley,” details how the 500 acres in Mohave County are being developed to create a hemp-growing community that will provide veterans an opportunity to take part in the multi-billion dollar hemp industry, which is expected to grow to more than $2.1 billion by 2020.

“In a public company, you’re supposed to make a profit,” Hemp, Inc. CEO Bruce Perlowin told The Kingman Daily Miner. “However, you can make a profit and help American veterans at the same time, to help solve social problems.” According to Perlowin, the company is coordinating tours of the 500-acre Veteran Village Kins Community with master growers from all over America. “The business model has changed from master growers growing on 50 acres to 5 acres.  Five-acre lots are much more manageable. We are also in the process of setting up a 60-ft dome for the Hemp University classes, here in Arizona. Classes are tentatively scheduled to start July 2018.”

Interested master growers, from around the country, should contact Project Manager, Dwight Jory at ecogold22@gmail.com.

As Arizona and other states continue to adopt hemp legislation, companies seeking to enter or further develop their footprint in the industrial hemp marketplace are aligning with Hemp, Inc. for the company’s proven expertise and state-of-the-art hemp processing and manufacturing infrastructure in Spring Hope, North Carolina. Hemp, Inc.’s 85,000 square foot hemp processing and manufacturing facility has been operational since August 2017.

As previously mentioned in the below press release, the number of master growers from Oregon, Colorado, California, Kentucky, North Carolina, Nevada and, of course, Arizona has increased from seven to “dozens of master growers”, companies and organizations. These master growers have expressed an interest in pursuing a joint venture with Hemp, Inc. to each grow industrial hemp on the 300 fenced acres in Arizona as part of "The Great United American Hemp Project."

Read the following October 24, 2017 press release, *Hemp, Inc. Announces Strategic Hemp Growing Partner "Veteran Village Kins Community Arizona, Inc." Completes Final Site Plan Blueprints*, below:

Hemp, Inc. has announced that its strategic growing partner, "Veteran Village Kins Community Arizona, Inc.," has completed its final site plan blueprints for its 500-acre site in Golden Valley, Arizona (20 miles north of Kingman, AZ and 90 minutes from Las Vegas, NV). The site plan was submitted to the Mohave County Building Department for final review. The Company is also in the final stages of completing the necessary infrastructure to support an off-grid, renewable, energy system. With the solar equipment in place, the site's solar power operation is now complete.

Dwight Jory, the Project Manager for the "Veteran Village Kins Community Arizona, Inc.," said, "We are very happy with the progress. Our Kins Community is really beginning to come together." In anticipation of planting to begin during the spring, 300 acres have been fenced, 16 overnight trailer park sites are under construction, and six 40x40-ft organic vegetable gardens are ready for seasonal planting, according to Jory. As for the 6 geodesic domes mentioned in an earlier press release, 1 is structurally complete with only the electrical and plumbing to be completed. The rest are on site awaiting final site plan approval. "We are now accepting volunteers who have expressed an interest in helping to build the first Kins Community for our veterans," said Jory. Those interested in making the first hemp growing CBD-producing "Veteran Village Kins Community" become a reality should contact Ms. Sandra Williams via email (swilliams@hempinc.com).

One thousand trees, on 36 of the 500-acres, have also been planted, with an additional 1,000 trees on order. The "Veteran Village Kins Community" site plan also includes a 100,000-square foot GMP compliant, central processing plant, CBD testing laboratory, and various health and wellness centers to support veterans who may have psychological, emotional or health issues.

"As Hemp, Inc. positions itself on the forefront of America's industrial hemp revolution, we see our partnership with 'Veteran Village Kins Community Arizona, Inc.' being paramount in supporting the small family farm movement that we are confident will reshape the American landscape," said Perlowin. "As we work toward getting our eco-village up and running in Arizona, we are also aggressively scouting strategic locations in other states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. Giving veterans and other Americans a place to learn new skills and take part in this multi-billion-dollar hemp CBD market is very exciting. It's a big part of our mission to give back."

According to Perlowin, seven "master hemp growers" from Oregon, Colorado, California, Kentucky, North Carolina, Nevada and, of course, Arizona have expressed an interest in pursuing a joint venture with Hemp, Inc. to each grow industrial hemp on the 300 fenced acres in Arizona. Perlowin says he'll call this "The Great United American Hemp Project."

Obama explains why he signed a deal with Netflix and how he thinks it will help solve our political divide

Obama explains why he signed a deal with Netflix and how he thinks it will help solve our political divide· *Netflix recently signed a production deal with Barack and Michelle Obama.*
· *Obama spoke publicly about his deal with Netflix at a tech conference on Wednesday, which he said will focus on identifying and promoting people with interesting and important stories to tell that can help everyone around the world better understand each other.*

--------------------

On Monday, Netflix announced that it had signed a multimillion deal with former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, and on Wednesday, Obama spoke publicly about the deal for the first time.

Obama was speaking at a tech conference in Las Vegas hosted by identity security company Okta when he was asked about the deal.

Obama explained that the Netflix deal was going to be focused on telling people's stories. He said he hopes these stories will help people see and better understand one another and ultimately help us move past the divisive political discourse that has mired Washington for so long.

"I would not have been president had I not learned very early on in my professional career the importance of stories," Obama told a standing-room-only crowd of thousands of people.

He recounted his first job out of college as a community organizer, helping bring various factions together to solve local problems from crime to underfunded schools. An older, experienced community organizer told the young Obama at the time that before he started to suggest solutions to problems, he should spend a month talking to people and hearing their stories.

"Everyone has a story that is pretty sacred" about the significant events in their lives, he said. Listening led to relationships, which led to people working together.

The Obamas used that lesson on the importance of listening when the future president campaigned for the Senate and presidency.

"We want to tell stories," he said, "This [Netflix deal] becomes a platform. We are interested in lifting people up and identifying people doing amazing work."

"We did this in the White House," he said.

"For instance, the very first time Lin-Manuel Miranda performed the first song in Hamilton was at the White House at a poetry slam we did," he said. At the time, Miranda had already won a Tony for "In the Heights."

Obama asked him what he planned to perform and he said, "I’m going to do a rap about the first treasury secretary." Obama said he wryly replied, "Ok, good luck with that."

Another time was when Obama's good friend Bruce Springsteen did an intimate performance for the Obamas and their senior staff as a gift. He has since turned that into his current Broadway play Bruce in the USA, where he weaves music with stories from his life together.

That's the kind of content Obama imagines he'll produce for Netflix, he said, stories "we think are important, and lift up and identify talent, that can amplify the connections between all of us," he said. "I continue to believe that if we are hearing each other's stories and recognizing ourselves in each other, then our democracy works."

"We are all human. I know this sounds trite, and yet, right now globally, we have competing narratives," he said.

As the world grapples with issues caused by globalization or migration, there are two ways to respond. Humans have historically responded by feeling threatened. "We go tribal. We go ethnic. we pull in, we push away," he said.

But in the last 70-80 years, led by America and its ideal of freedom and democracy, "We can think and reason and connect and set up institutions based on rule of law and a sense of principals and the dignity and worth of every individual."

Obama acknowledged that America, both at home and abroad, hasn't always lived up to those ideals, particularly when it came to racism or gender equality. But he said we've made steady progress, "in fits and starts."

"And now there’s a clash in those two ways of seeing the world," he said, without naming any names or current political figures.

"I’m putting my money on the latter way," Obama told the conference crowd. "That’s what we hope to be a voice to, through Netflix and through my foundation, where we’re identifying and training the next generation of leaders here in the United States and around the world. So they can start sharing their stories and cooperating."

Bids for Clark County-wide and College of South Nevada LED contracts for thousands of LED’s

Las Vegas, NV, May 24, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Renewable Energy and Power (OTC:RBNW, or “REAP”), an LED lighting solutions company, today announced a new initiative to compete for contracts nationally online with its specialized line of innovative LED products.

The initial bids are for all public Clark County, Nevada LED lighting needs, and the exterior parking lighting for the College of South Nevada, totaling over 6,000 lights and accessories.

The Company offers unique value lighting solutions to its customers including customized low glare parking lights, and a specialized line of energy saving, long lasting and pleasant-light illumination products.

A recent example of value-add features is the completion of an Alameda, CA affordable housing parking lighting project that enhances safety while reducing scattered glare.

Nevada Government e-Marketplace, or NGEM, is the online bidding site for contracts with municipalities throughout the state.  New requests for municipal bids appear continually, and REAP will be bidding on any that require LED lighting, solar or wind power, the three areas in which the company operates.

The extensive preparation required to bid online through NGEM will now be applied to sites for state-centralized, municipal contracts throughout the country in a new initiative expected to significantly improve sales volume of our LED Lites USA subsidiary.

“The online bid sites for governmental bodies nationwide are a prime source of revenue producing contracts,” noted REAP CEO Donald MacIntyre. “We are now qualified to compete for contracts using online bidding, a capability which required considerable preparation and effort.”

*About Renewable Energy and Power*

REAP seeks to make the Green Energy market cost competitive with fossil fuels through innovation in solar, wind-power and LED lighting. Federal and state legislation in the United States provide for tax incentives that drive businesses and consumers to replace older technologies with new solar and LED alternatives of the types offered by REAP. www.reappower.com

International Brighton Thing: Europe Dazzles At The Great Escape 2018

$

International Brighton Thing: Europe Dazzles At The Great Escape 2018 International highlights from the enormous south coast showcase...

Something incredible is happening in Brighton. I know this, because people keep coming up to me and saying things like “this hasn’t happened for years” and “you don’t realise how luck you are” and “I might take my pint outside”. Has the rapture arrived? Lord, have The Rapture arrived? No. It’s *The Great Escape 2018*, and the sun is beating down on Brighton like it owes him money. Welcome to festival season.

Naturally, my first destination is the pier. Located between a selection of children’s rides and the sea, Horatio’s is the ideal venue to kick off the weekend – and, as it turns out, *LUCIA* are the ideal band. It’s hard to believe that the eponymous frontwoman started out writing indie-folk, singer-songwriter fair, because today’s set gives every impression that she came into the world already clutching a fuzz pedal and a bottle of bleach. A dizzying set climaxes with single ‘Melted Ice Cream’, and the singer immediately struts off the stage – not as a diva, but as someone who’s work here is done.

It’s a perfect set-up for *The Ninth Wave*, who’ve been attracting a lot of buzz with their own brand of post-punk noir. Sure enough, the band reward Horatio’s with an electrifying run through what already sounds like a hit-packed setlist, with Haydn Park-Patterson’s cry of “did you forget to tell me?” from ‘New Kind of Ego’ ringing around the venue.

High on my priority was catching Russian experimental-pop hybrid *Kate NV*, and the Moscow-based artist didn’t disappoint. What’s most striking is that the set is almost entirely made up of dense, electronic explorations – brilliant in their own right, but almost lost set next to the bubblegum genius of ‘Kata’, quietly one of the catchiest pop songs of the last twelve months.

- - -

- - -

But it’s Glasgow’s mobile party machine *Bossy Love* who perhaps steal the first day. Comprised of Amandah Wilkinson (formerly of Operator Please) on vocals, John Baillie Jr (formerly of Dananananackroyd) on live drums, and the recent inclusion of Ollie Cox on keys, the set is relentless from the first second. Not only do Bossy Love sound like a great band, performing with the kind of tightness you’d expect from a 20-year-old funk band, but they [i]look[/i] like a party in full swing – right down to Amandah’s unexpected dance-off in the middle of the crowd with an excited-looking fan. A night to remember.

By the time the sun’s come up again, we’re ready to explore. Hatchie provides a glossy start to the day, and while I’d wager that the Australian four-piece own at least five copies of ‘Heaven Or Las Vegas’ between them, you can’t fault their own immaculate take on dream pop. Over at Komedia, rising Dutch star *Pitou* is absolutely sensational, layering harmonies with her two backing singers that one can only soak up and applaud. A beautiful start to another beautiful day.

Down on the seafront, the Russians continue to notch up more great performances. *Wet Red* appear to have more costume changes than a Beyoncé show, the singer peaking with an intriguing combination of feather mohawk and boxing gloves, but it’s no gimmick: the band’s textured electronic rock speaks for itself. Neoclassical composer *Kirill Richter’s* lush arrangements certainly don’t require any window dressing, the artist weaving one exquisite piece into another until I’m mesmerised.

- - -

- - -

After an uneven set from audiobooks proves to be one of the weekend’s few low points, there’s a dash back into town for *Fabrizio Cammarata*, who proves to be utterly worth it. The Palermo-based songwriter is adroitly presented in a seated venue, where his live show blossoms – not only do the lovelorn songs seem to fill every corner of the auditorium, but there’s a sense of theatre to his live performance that suits the venue too. Spellbinding stuff.

One of the great joys of any festival is catching something unexpectedly great, and that’s exactly what *KOPS* delivers; crafting modern R&B with a surprisingly slick singing voice, it would be no surprise at all to see him tearing up the charts one day. Free Love (formerly Happy Meals, and seemingly too late to change the billing) prove to be another weekend-defining party set, the singer seemingly determined to explore every inch of the venue with her microphone, including at least two stints standing on the bar counter. It’s a blast, and by the time, SADO OPERA’s electric cabaret has us swinging from the rafters, the sun is threatening to come up again…

In keeping with the international spirit, the festival is beginning to look like a United Nations of great new music. The Dutch team continue to impress with both *The Homesick* and *Charlie & The Lesbians* putting in fun psych-rock and garage-rock shifts respectively, while Montreal’s *Freak Heat Waves* do their best to defy genre labels altogether. Mother’s Cake, hailing from Austria, don’t seem like my cup of tea at all to begin with, but by the end of set, the frenetic bass solos prove too much fun to resist. Yeah, that’s right: bass solos. I literally went there. It was brilliant.

Without applying too much gravitas to a festival that celebrates colourful party scenes beyond all else, it sometimes feels like post-Brexit England is suddenly desperate to cling on to as much European music and culture as possible – and rightly so. Make no mistake, there were incredible English bands in the line-up – Let’s Eat Grandma and The Go! Team were there for god’s sake – but it’s about time we paid more attention to the music scenes that continue to spring up around the continent. The Great Escape, more than a lot of English festivals, seems to understand that. Long may it continue.

Obama sounds off on the need for Silicon Valley tech companies to be regulated and improve the way they handle data breaches

Obama sounds off on the need for Silicon Valley tech companies to be regulated and improve the way they handle data breaches· *Barack Obama talked about Silicon Valley and the need for regulation at a recent tech conference in Las Vegas.*
· *The former president said that both tech companies and lawmakers in Washington need to be more "proactive" in figuring out "a framework" for future regulation.*
· *He also criticized the way recent data breaches have been handled, stressing that conversations between tech companies and lawmakers need to happen more often so everyone involved is educated about each others' concerns.*

--------------------

Barack Obama is a steadfast believer that common-sense regulations are a force for good in the world.

But speaking on stage at a tech conference in Las Vegas hosted by Okta on Wednesday, the former president acknowledged that when it comes to regulating Silicon Valley, Washington doesn't move fast enough, and often doesn't cooperate as well as it needs to.

Obama never mentioned the Cambridge Analytica scandal by name, where Facebook data was scraped from millions of users and then used to influence voters during the 2016 US presidential election and the Brexit vote.

But he told Okta CEO Todd McKinnon that "data collection and how data is used" is an example of an area that needs regulation. This includes what happens to people's data and "how it gets commercialized."

Obama wants to see Silicon Valley and lawmakers work together to come up with regulations for "a framework, agreed upon, transparent, that people understand."

He said that both sides should be willing, if not exactly eager, to get such regulations on the books, as he thinks the current, "spasmodic way" response needs improvement. "There’s been a data breach, people are outraged, they feel they don’t know that their data was used in a particular way, so then people [in the Valley and Washington] scramble to catch up to the headlines."

Obama said that he's been working to encourage the people he associates with in the industry to "be proactive" and go to lawmakers in advance to tell them, "Here are the questions we have to grapple with, here’s the business model we think makes sense, here are the tools we have to work with. We recognize we are under some obligation that ordinary people and consumers understand what it is they are giving up and getting in return."

And while Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has spent hours testifying in front of Congress, promising to work on such regulations, (and a shorter time testifying in front of the European Parliament, apologizing but basically sidestepping deeper questions), the actual work on regulations has yet to seriously begin.

"That kind of conversation hasn't taken place," Obama said to the conference crowd.

He also emphasized that regulations on tech aren't just about social media data. There's a crop of other young technologies like artificial intelligence, and perhaps even cryptocurrencies, that Washington and Silicon Valley should work on together.

"Right now, in the tech community, they tend to think all that stuff over there [in Washington] is complicated, unclear, inefficient, and then folks get surprised [with breaches and incidents] after the fact. That doesn’t benefit anyone," he said.

The US military released a study on time travel and warp drives — here’s what a theoretical physicist thinks of it· *The US Department of Defense funded a series of studies on advanced aerospace technologies, including warp drives.*
· *The studies came out of a program that also funded research into UFO sightings.*
· *One report describes the possibility of using dark energy to warp space and effectively travel faster than light.*
· *However, a theoretical physicist says there's "zero chance that anyone within our lifetimes or the next 1,000 years" will see it happen.*

--------------------

Sometime after August 2008, the US Department of Defense contracted dozens of researchers to look into some very, very out-there aerospace technologies, including never-before-seen methods of propulsion, lift, and stealth.

Two researchers came back with a 34-page report for the "propulsion" category titled, "Warp Drive, Dark Energy and the Manipulation of Extra Dimensions".

The document is dated April 2, 2010, though it was only recently released by the Defense Intelligence Agency. (Business Insider first learned about in a post by Paul Szoldra at Task & Purpose.) The authors suggest we may not be too far away from cracking the mysteries of higher, unseen dimensions and negative or "dark energy"— a repulsive force that physicists believe is pushing the universe apart at ever-faster speeds.

"Control of this higher dimensional space may bе а source of technological control оvеr the dark energy density and could ultimately play а role in the development of exotic propulsion technologies; specifically, а warp drive," the authors write. "[T]rips to the planets within our own solar system would take hours rather than years, and journeys to local star system would be measured in weeks rather than hundreds of thousands of years."

However, Sean Carroll, a theoretical physicist at Caltech who studies and follows the topics covered by the report, had a lot of cold water to pour on the report's optimism.

"It's bits and pieces of theoretical physics dressed up as if it has something to do with potentially real-world applications, which it doesn't." Carroll said. "This is not crackpot. This is not the Maharajah saying we're going to use spirit energy to fly off the ground — this is real physics. But this is not something that's going to connect with engineering anytime soon, probably anytime ever."

James Т. Lacatski, a Defense Intelligence Agency official listed as a contact on the report, did not immediately to respond a query from Business Insider.

*Where the warp-drive study came from*

The nature of this study is still making its way to the public.

What is known is that it's an "acquisition threat support" reference document, which helps the US military anticipate or describe new enemy technologies — apparently including (very, very) notional ones. It was also one work in "а series of advanced technology reports" for something called the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program, or AAWSAP.

This was a larger program that included Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program — an effort to investigate alleged UFO sightings by military personnel, according a recent story by KLAS-TV in Las Vegas.

The New York Times and Politico revealed AATIP's existence in December. The outlets said former Nevada senator Harry Reid helped organize it and secure millions in secret government funding (sometimes called "black money") for the effort.

A large share of this money reportedly went to Robert Bigelow — a real-estate mogul who's working to build private space stations through Bigelow Aerospace, is a friend of Reid's, and someone who has funded his own UFO research for years. The billionaire reportedly formed a separate entity, called Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies, to secure the government funding and use it to hire 46 researchers and "dozens of other support personnel," KLAS-TV said.

An anonymous senior intelligence official told Politico that AATIP began mostly to root out the existence of unknown Chinese and Russian military technologies. But after a couple of years, "the consensus was we really couldn't find anything of substance," the official said. "They produced reams of paperwork. After all of that there was really nothing there that we could find."

Scientists are also skeptical of UFOs, even after viewing spooky videos obtained by AATIP, one of which shows an undated encounter with "an aircraft surrounded by some kind of glowing aura traveling at high speed and rotating as it moves," the Times wrote.

Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute previously told Business Insider that, after 50 years of reported alien visits, "the really good evidence that we're being visited still has failed to surface." He added: "It is a little odd that aliens would come hundreds and hundreds of light-years to do nothing."

The larger program that looked into the feasibility of warp drives, wormholes, and stargates is meeting similar scrutiny from established experts.

*The physics of warp drives*

In the warp-drive study, the authors laid out several well-established ideas in physics.

Those concepts include dark energy; general relativity, which Albert Einstein pioneered and predicted some bizarre-yet-real phenomena in the universe (like the warping of spacetime and gravitational waves); the Casimir effect, which describes the existence of a quantum "vacuum energy"; and M-theory — the idea that perhaps seven extra dimensions (which a warp drive could exploit) may be wrapped up in the four we're familiar with, including time.

It then mashes this work together to lay out a potential use of these properties that'd circumvent Einstein's cardinal rule: Nothing can travel faster than light in a vacuum.

"If one is to realistically entertain the notion of interstellar exploration in timeframes of а human lifespan, а dramatic shift in the traditional approach to spacecraft propulsion is necessary," said the report, which goes on to suggest that a warp drive might be feasible.

The study includes a table of various destinations and how quickly they might be reached by bending spacetime to travel 100 times faster than light.

The way this might work, the report says, is by using a lot of dark (or negative) energy to expand an extra dimension into a "bubble." Such a bubble would be made large enough to fit a spaceship of perhaps 100 cubic meters — roughly the size of a semi-trailer truck.

A contracting region of spacetime in front of the ship, plus an expanding region behind it, would then propel the bubble and ship down a sort of spacetime tube without technically exceeding the speed of light.

Carroll also said that the concept of a warp drive "is not crackpot"— Miguel Alcubierre, a Mexican theoretical physicist, invented the concept in 1994.

"You can't go faster than the speed of light. But what you can can imagine doing is effectively twisting spacetime so that it looks like you're moving faster than the speed of light," Carroll said. "If you want to go to Alpha Centauri, for example, you can ask yourself, 'Well, could I bend spacetime so that Alpha Centauri is next to me, so that it takes a day to go there, rather than tens of [thousands of] years? Can I make the warping of spacetime do that?' And the answer is sure, you can do that."

But Carroll said the DIA report goes too far in its analysis.

"There is something called a warp drive, there are extra dimensions, there is a Casimir effect, and there's dark energy. All of these things are true," he said. "But there's zero chance that anyone within our lifetimes, or the next 1,000 years, are going to build anything that makes use of any of these ideas, for defense purposes or anything like that."

*The problems and perils of faster-than-light travel*

Carrol said warp drives are so removed from plausible reality because no one knows what negative energy is, how to make it, or how to store it, let alone put it to use.

What's more, the amount of negative energy you'd need to reach a place like Alpha Centauri — the nearest star system to Earth, at 4.367 light-years away — in a couple years with a 100-cubic-meter ship is truly astronomical.

"If you took the entire Earth and annihilated it into energy, that's how much energy you'd need, except you'd need a negative amount of that, which no one has any clue how to make," Carroll said. "We're not taking the atoms of the Earth and dispersing them like the Death Star would do. We're making them cease to exist."

Then this energy has to be captured, stored, and used with 100% efficiency.

"It's completely crazy talk," Carroll said. "It's not something like, 'Oh, we need better transistors.' This is something that is not anywhere within the realm of feasibility."

The study states that its conclusions are speculative, admits the negative-energy figure "is, indeed, an incredible number," and adds that "a full understanding of the true nature of dark energy may be many years away."

However, it suggests "that experimental breakthroughs at the Large Hadron Collider оr developments in the field of M-theory could lead to а quantum leap in our understanding of this unusual form of energy and perhaps help to direct technological innovations."

Nearly a decade on, none of these developments have panned out. The LHC has yet to find any evidence of particles that'd crack the mysteries of dark energy, nor have experiments really advanced M-theory.

But assuming negative energy could somehow be extracted, a planet's worth of exotic matter fed into a spaceship's warp drive engines, and a suitable destination picked out, the crew might encounter a number of show-stopping problems.

Interstellar travelers may lose control of their ship the moment they start it due to the warping of space itself. Hawking radiation — which is theoretically found at the edges of black holes and other highly warped regions of space — might roast passengers while shutting down their warp field. And slowing down may be deadly: Several light-years' worth of cosmic dust and gas between the origin and destination might turn into a dangerous shockwave of high-energy particles and radiation upon arrival.

"It's possible in the sense that I can't actually rule it out, but I don't think it's actually possible," Carroll said of warp drives and faster-than-light travel. "I think if we knew physics better, we'd just say, 'No, you can't do that.'"
